Gérald Forschelet (born September 19, 1981 in Papeete , Tahiti , French Polynesia ) is a Tahitian- French football player on the position of midfielder . After working in England, France, Switzerland and Sweden, he last played in the Belgian amateur field.

Career

Start of professional career at AS Cannes

Born in Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia, a French overseas territory in Polynesia , Forschelet began his active career as a football player in 1998 at AS Cannes on the Côte d'Azur, which had just been relegated to Ligue 2 at the time . After he was mainly used in the youth team and was already considered a great and promising talent, he made his professional debut in France's second-highest league in the 2000/01 season . He was used on February 17, 2001 in the 2-0 away defeat against HSC Montpellier in one half of the game and then replaced by the long-time AS Cannes player Fabrice Muller . Another six league appearances followed this season before the team in 19th and penultimate place in the final table had to relegate to the Championnat de France National , the third highest division in French men's football.

From France to England

There, the native Tahitian was used in ten league games, in which he scored a goal and at the end of the season only just missed promotion to Ligue 2 in sixth place (tied with FC Angoulême ). He also came to his first appearances in the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue for the 2001/02 season . In the course of this season, a change in the talent highly praised by the media and those in charge became noticeable. In addition to various British clubs such as Glasgow Rangers , Chelsea FC , Blackburn Rovers , West Ham United and Birmingham City , the Bolton Wanderers , another English first division club, showed interest in Forschelet. In the end, the 1.87 m tall defensive midfielder decided to move to the latter club, where he signed a contract with a term of two and a half years in February 2002, after having previously been signed for over four years. With the English, however, he was unable to assert himself in midfield against internationally experienced players such as Jay-Jay Okocha , Kevin Nolan , Per Frandsen and Iván Campo and did not get beyond appearances for the reserve team.

Transfer to Switzerland

For the 2003/04 season , Forschelet moved to the Swiss Super League , the top division in the country, where he signed a loan deal with Neuchâtel Xamax . In Switzerland, Forschelet held a wide variety of positions in midfield and was used, among other things, as an offensive, right, central but also as a defensive midfielder. The Tahitian-French dual citizen almost became a regular in the starting line-up of the French-speaking Switzerland, as he played in 24 championship games and scored six goals, including a game against FC Aarau on April 4, 2004 Double hit. Although Forschelet's good offensive performance, the team ranked ninth in the table after completing 36 championship games and had to compete in the barrage games against the second in the Challenge League , FC Vaduz . There the team was able to assert itself with a total score of 3: 2 over the Liechtenstein club and was allowed to remain in the Swiss first class. Forschelet was one of the key characters, as he was used in both barrage games and also contributed a hit. In the 2003/04 Swiss Cup , he and the team made it to the quarter-finals, where they finally lost 3-0 to the later finalists, Grasshopper Club Zurich .

After he had to leave Bolton Wanderers at the end of the 2003/04 season, Forschelet was released to France in June 2004, where he signed a two-year contract with FC Istres with Ligue 1 play . In addition to FC Istres , French clubs expanded their interest in the young midfielder with FC Metz and FC Sochaux . At the club from Provence he was used in only two championship games. He made his first division debut a day before his 23rd birthday in the 0-1 away defeat against FC Nantes , when he came on the pitch for Abdoulaye Diagne-Faye in the 76th minute of play . Another 23-minute short assignment followed on November 6, 2004 in the 0-2 home defeat against OSC Lille , where he replaced Laurent Courtois . But when the contract was terminated amicably with the club at the beginning of the year (Forschelet hardly had any match practice due to two injuries), the midfielder was firmly committed to Neuchâtel Xamax. However, he was only used sporadically at the club from French- speaking Switzerland and so made eleven appearances in the Super League as an attacking or central midfielder after his return to Switzerland. However, he played through only once for the full length of the game and was either substituted in or out in the remaining games.

First move to Belgium

In the summer break before the 2005/06 season, Forschelet transferred to long-time Belgian first division club Sporting Charleroi , where he signed a contract for a period of one year with an option for two more years. At the traditional Charleroi club , the midfielder played 14 championship games during the season, in which he scored one goal. With the team he finished fifth in the table at the end of the season and also made it to the quarter-finals in the Beker van België , where they were finally eliminated from the current cup competition with 0: 2 against Lierse SK . Since he did not make the breakthrough he had hoped for in Belgium either, another club change took place at the beginning of 2007. After a few offers from national and international clubs, the then 25-year-old headed to Sweden for Assyriska Föreningen , who at that time was still playing in Division 1 Norra , one of two parallel seasons of the third-rate Swedish Division 1 . After he was able to convince in the trial training in March 2007, he initially only received a trial contract with a term of two months in April 2007, because he had ruptured the cruciate ligament in the last game of the season in Belgium and so he lacked the necessary game practice.

Successful time in Sweden

In Sweden he came to a number of championship appearances at the club from Södertälje not far from the capital Stockholm . By the end of the season at the end of October 2007, Forschelet had made 18 league appearances in which he scored two goals. With the team he managed this season the renewed promotion in Sweden's second division, in the Superettan . In mid-November 2007 it became known that Forschelet's contract will no longer be extended and that he had to leave the association. But before the start of the new season in the second highest Swedish league, the midfielder left the club to look for new challenges that he would find again a little later in Belgium. This time he was drawn to Tubize for the AFC Tubize , which was still playing in the top Belgian soccer league at the time , with whom he started the 2008/09 season .

Return to Belgium

After being tested for over two weeks and finally given a one-year contract, the midfielder was to become one of the leading players in the squad trained by Albert Cartier . At the new club he chose the shirt number 23, which was intended as a tribute to the talented Belgian striker François Sterchele , who died on May 8, 2008 at the age of 26 in a car accident. Sterchele also wore the shirt number 23 in the game; During his time at Sporting Charleroi, Forschelet played alongside Sterchele. After signing his contract, the native Tahitian played in 16 league games, in which he remained without scoring and at the end of the season with the team in 17th place, together with the RAEC Mons , was relegated to the second-rate EXQI League. Immediately after the team's relegation to the second division, he left the club in the summer of 2009 and was henceforth without a club.

Unsuccessful trial training in Sweden and return to Belgium as an amateur player

In December 2009, Forschelet completed a trial training at the Swedish first division club Åtvidabergs FF , where he was injured and therefore could not convince. In early March 2010, the committed midfielder tried his luck again in Sweden. This time he signed up for training at the Swedish second division club Ljungskile SK , but was still unable to convince after four days and had to leave the team again.

If he had been without a club for a long time, he was signed by the Belgian amateur club Cité Sport from Liège in November 2010 , for which he was eligible to play from January of the following year - at the same time he declared the end of his professional career ambitions. In May 2012 he extended his contract for another season. The native Tahitian also worked for the Belgian amateur club in the 2013/14 season. In 2014 Cité Sport Grâce-Hollogne , the club's official name, merged with the RFC Tilleur Saint-Gilles and continued to play in the Belgian fourth division under the master number of Cité Sport and the new name FC Tilleur . During this time, Forschelet was a member of the squad, where he has a regular place in the midfield.
