Günther Bantzer
Günther Bantzer (born September 1, 1921 in Dresden ; † October 16, 2019 in Kiel ) was a German politician ( SPD ) and long-time Lord Mayor of Kiel.
Life
Bantzer studied law at the Philipps University of Marburg from 1946 to 1950 . In 1950 he was federal secretary of the Socialist German Student Union (SDS), 1951/52 SDS federal chairman. Before he was the Lord Mayor of Kiel from 1965 to 1980, he was press officer for the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia , Fritz Steinhoff , from 1956 to 1958 , and from 1958 to 1965 he was chief district director of the Herford / East Westphalia district . He was particularly committed to sports issues. During his term of office in Kiel , the 1972 Olympic sailing competitions were held in Kiel-Schilksee , which went hand in hand with the construction of the Kiel motorway connection through the A 215 , the Olympic village and the second bridge over the Kiel Canal . He also initiated the game line at the Kiel Week . From 1968 to 1980 he was a member of the Presidium of the German Association of Cities , of which he was President from 1979 to 1980.
Bantzer, the Kiel mayor with the longest tenure (1965-1980) in the 20th century , was wearing his city after contacts with Rostock and Tallinn at the local level actively to detente in.
Bantzer died in October 2019 at the age of 98.
