Karlheinz Luckhardt (* 3. May 1932 in Bochum ; † 11. August 2019 in Kiel ) was a German SPD - politician . He was a member of the state parliament in Schleswig-Holstein and Lord Mayor of Kiel. He also made a name for himself in breeding the nightshade family .

During the Nazi regime , Luckhardt was refused to attend secondary schools because of an "unsatisfactory Aryan certificate ". He trained as a painter and worked in this profession for eleven years, then as a crane operator for three and a half years. The Codetermination Foundation enabled Luckhardt to study economics , business administration , law and sociology at what was then the Academy for Economics and Politics in Hamburg.

In 1963 Luckhardt moved to Kiel, where he was a research assistant to the SPD parliamentary group in the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament until 1971. From 1966 to 1971 he was a member of the Kiel Council, most recently as chairman of the council. In 1971 he won a state parliament mandate and became parliamentary manager of the SPD parliamentary group. From November 1, 1980, Luckhardt was Lord Mayor of the state capital Kiel. After two six-year terms, he retired in 1992.

Luckhardt cultivated his hobbies with publicity. He played guitar in the trio Die Maikaifer and sang workers' songs . In addition, he made a new breed of tomato and potato popular, which carries potatoes underground and tomatoes above ground and which he called tomato potato (see also Tomoffel ). He presented individual tomato- potatoes to guests in flower boxes on the town hall balcony.
