Günther Karl Anselm Ernst von Dewitz called von Krebs (born December 6, 1885 in Berlin ; † June 5, 1940 near Tergnier , France ) was a German officer , most recently major general and regimental commander in World War II .

Life

origin

Günther came from the old Mecklenburg-Pomerania noble family von Dewitz , which was first mentioned in 1212. He was the son of the Prussian major Ernst von Dewitz (1851–1900) and his wife Sabine von Puttkamer (1864–1904).

Military career

Dewitz joined the Guard Fusilier Regiment of the Prussian Army on October 31, 1903 as a flag junior . There he was on 14 June 1904. Ensign appointed and on May 18, 1905 Lieutenant promoted. As a first lieutenant , Dewitz was transferred to the 6th Guard Infantry Brigade on August 22, 1914 after the beginning of the First World War . Here he worked as an orderly officer until May 14, 1915 and was then assigned to the Deputy General Command of the Guard Corps . In November 1915, Dewitz, meanwhile promoted to captain , returned as a company commander to his regular regiment on the Eastern Front . In April 1916 he moved with his regiment to the western front and stayed here until the end of the war. a. Involved in the fighting on the Somme , Arras and the German spring offensive in 1918 .

After the Armistice of Compiègne Dewitz returned home with the regiment and was employed with the staff from December 1918. After the demobilization and dissolution, Dewitz was taken over into the provisional Reichswehr and used as a company commander in the Reichswehr Infantry Regiment 115. With the formation of the Reichswehr, Dewitz's previous regiment was merged with the 5th Infantry Regiment . He served here until March 31, 1927 as chief of the 7th Company. Then he was transferred to Stettin to the staff of the 2nd division . On February 1, 1928 Dewitz was promoted to major and as such on February 1, 1931 to commander of the III. Battalion in the 5th (Prussian) Infantry Regiment. On October 1, 1932, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and from October 1, 1933 to October 14, 1935, he was employed by the regimental staff. In the meantime, Dewitz had become a colonel on September 1, 1934 . From October 15, 1935 to March 30, 1937 he commanded the 47th Infantry Regiment. Subsequently, Dewitz was head of training in Saarbrücken at the General Command of the Saar Palatinate Border Troop.

After the beginning of the Second World War, Dewitz was given command of the 1st Battalion of the 483 Infantry Regiment on August 26, 1939, and finally he was appointed regimental commander on October 25, 1939. He fell in this position on June 5, 1940. Dewitz was subsequently promoted to major general with RDA from June 1, 1940.

Dewitz married on September 29, 1908 in Kiel Agnes von Prittwitz and Gaffron (born August 2, 1888 in Kiel, † September 1, 1969 in Marburg an der Lahn ), the daughter of the German admiral à la suite Curt von Prittwitz and Gaffron and his first wife Luise von Schönberg.
