Johann Gabriel von Rosenschanz also Peter Gabriel von Rosenschantz (* March 1737 in Mecklenburg ; † November 15, 1807 in Türpitz ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Gabriel came from the 1752 to the Swedish nobility upmarket family of Rosenschantz , His parents were the Swedish captain and commander of Wismar Peter Gabriel von Rosenschantz (1696–1753) and Louisa Dorothea von Wopersnow . The Danish major general Joachim Ulrich von Wopersnow (1715–1782) was a brother of his mother and thus his uncle.

Military career

Rosenschanz first went to Danish service in 1750 and joined the 1st Jutland National Cavalry Regiment. He became a cornet (officer) , but took his leave on April 13, 1757. A few days later on April 26, 1757, he went into Prussian service and was employed in the hussar regiment "von Seydlitz" . During the Seven Years' War Rosenschanz fought in the battles near Prague , Kolin , Roßbach , Leuthen and the siege of Prague. In the battle near Maxen he was seriously wounded and taken prisoner. Rosenschanz was only released from this after the war in 1763.

After his release he was transferred to the Cuirassier Regiment "von Seydlitz" on June 20, 1763 as Prime Lieutenant . On July 21, 1774 he became a staff assistant master and took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession in 1778/79 . After the war he became a captain and company commander on October 6, 1779 . On July 6, 1788 he was promoted to major and on January 8, 1793 appointed squadron chief. Rosenschanz then fought in the campaign in Poland in 1794/95 . In the battle near Kasimierez, he captured nine officers and 49 non-commissioned officers and commons and captured 61 horses. For this he received on July 28, 1794 the order Pour le Mérite . On October 22, 1797 he was then commander of the regiment. Shortly afterwards on May 23, 1798 he became lieutenant colonel and on May 23, 1799 colonel . On October 3, 1805 he received his resignation with the character as a major general with a pension of 800 dollars. He died on November 15, 1807 in Türpitz.
