Rudolf Gahlbeck was born in Malchow, Mecklenburg, in 1895 as the son of a businessman. Between 1908 and 1914 he attended the Realgymnasium in Güstrow , after which he was a soldier in the First World War . From 1916 to 1919 he studied German at the university in Rostock . These studies were continued at the Hamburg University , expanded to include art education with Arthur Illies at the State Art Academy, also in Hamburg , the practical training took place at a Wismar school. In 1921 the studies concluded with the examination for artistic teaching at secondary schools. First Gahlbeck was from 1922 drawing teacher at a private secondary school and then from 1925 art teacher at the Gymnasium Schwerin . For his own artistic training he used studies with Max Bergmann at his painting school in Haimhausen near Munich in 1926 . In 1944 Gahbeck was appointed a teacher.

From 1945 until his retirement in 1961, Rudolf Gahlbeck was an art teacher at the Goethe High School in Schwerin, and from 1946 also a lecturer at the Volkshochschule Schwerin. Rudolf Gahlbeck was an all-rounder as an artist. In addition to his main job as an art teacher, he was at home in many types of art. He was a painter, draftsman, graphic artist. He created posters , signets and book decorations , wrote novellas , poems , opera libretti and cantata texts . He composed songs, played the violin in his youth and played the piano in a spirited manner into old age.

His Hamburg studies brought him the acquaintance of Prof. Georg Anschütz (1886–1953) from the Psychological Institute of the University of Hamburg, whose research focused on music psychology and synesthesia - here the connections between color and music. From then on, Gahlbeck also dealt with color-tone research ; synopsies and a number of watercolors (color studies) were created, the content of which was the conversion of the music he had heard into pictures. He also wrote technical articles on this topic. In 1927 he was a participant in the first congress of the Society for Color and Clay Research in Hamburg. He also became an employee of the Psychological Aesthetic Research Society at the University of Hamburg .
