Gasselberg is a village and scattered settlement in western Styria and a cadastral community of the municipality of Krottendorf-Gaisfeld in the Voitsberg district , Styria . The place was an independent municipality from 1850 to 1948.

Place name and geography

The place name has the same origin as that of the neighboring Gaisfeld and was later transferred to the neighboring mountain. The part of the name Gassel- probably does not derive from the Middle High German avarice for a goat or goat, but in its earlier documented form written with -eu and -ev could refer to a person named Geu. A derivation from the Old High German gawi for Gau or geuß for flood is possible. The place name probably means something like mountain des Geu .

Gasselberg is located in the northeastern part of the municipality of Krottendorf-Gaisfeld, north of the main town Krottendorf, on the elevations north of the Kainach and Packer Straße B 70. In the southwest, Gasselberg borders the cadastral municipality of Arnstein , where the Kainach marks the borderline and in the west and northwest to the cadastral municipality of Thallein in the municipality of Voitsberg . In the northeast and east runs along the Mittereggerbach, the border to the market town of Stallhofen and the cadastral community of Muggauberg . Gaisfeld connects to the south-east and south, with Packer Strasse partially forming a border.

The individual layers Grabenbauer and Heindler still belong to Gasselberg .

history

Gasselberg emerged on a high medieval clearing area and originally consisted largely of vineyards and isolated farms. The first documentary mention was made in 1234 as in monte Gevsvelt . Further mentions were made in 1395 as Gesuelder Perig , 1444 as Gaisuelter perg , 1782 as Gasslberg and area and finally in 1822 as Gasselberg . Viticulture at Geusveld is mentioned for the first time in 1285 and the Seckau Abbey and the Greißenegg estate also owned vineyards on the Gasselberg.

The inhabitants of Gasselberg belonged to various manors until 1848, such as the dominions Greißenegg, Herbersdorf , Kleinkainach , Krems , Ligist , Obervoitsberg , Piber and Winterhof . Most of the wine tenth went to the Piber reign, but also partly to the Lankowitz reign . Gasselberg belonged to the advertising district of the Ligist rule.

In 1850 was the constitution of the independent community Gasselberg established free communities. A toll booth was mentioned in 1872 and 1877 at the confluence of the Gasselberg municipal road with Bezirksstraße. A planned amalgamation of Gasselberg with the municipalities of Gaisfeld and Thallein failed in 1919. In May 1936 there was the local group Gaisfeld-Gasselberg of the Fatherland Front . On January 1, 1948, Gasselberg was finally incorporated into Gaisfeld.

Economy and Infrastructure

Gasselberg is dominated by agriculture and viticulture has probably played an important economic role since Roman times, at the latest from the Middle Ages into the 20th century. All of the larger rulers in the district had vineyards in Gasselberg. The local children attend schools in Sankt Johann ob Hohenburg and Stallhofen.

Sights and buildings

One of the most important buildings in Gasselberg is the Schreinerhof, built in the 16th century, which is also known as Gasselberg Castle . The house chapel of the manor house dates from 1845. Furthermore, the so-called Reisachburg of the Reisachers is said to have been located on the Gasselberg in the High Middle Ages .
