history
The first documentary mention as the Narrenstein took place in 1414. Further mentions followed in 1498 as am Arn , 1568 as in Teykyitsch an der Arnsten and from around 1790 as Arnstein . In the High Middle Ages , Arnstein was a cleared area with individual farms and wastelands. The rule Leon Roth had next 19 Mountain Holden and a wine tenth and until 1585 a must tithe in Arnstein and until about 1700, the Hofwald was the rule Krems in Arnstein. The inhabitants of Arnstein belonged to various manors until 1848, such as Greißenegg , Leonroth, Obervoitsberg Rehregg and the Dürnberg district of the Krems domain. The residents had to pay a valid to the Voitsberg Carmelite monastery while two thirds of the Garbenzehnt went to the Greißenegg rule. Furthermore, Arnstein was an advertising district of the Greißenegg rule.
For the period around 1840, a few vineyards are still occupied for the municipality. At the same time, at the confluence of the Gößnitzbach in the Teigitsch, a charring area is occupied for the wood that was washed here from the Reiner Forest behind Hirschegg . The coal was supplied to the Schweigerhof ironworks in Krems . At the site of the charring area, a wooden loop was later set up for the Voitsberg paper factory Kranz. On the left bank of the Gößnitzbach in 1853/54, the Carl Mayr tradesmen searched for iron ore through mining tunnels. In the process, deposits were found, which, however, only had a small extent, which is why no application was made for clearance . In 1868 Arnstein belonged to the Voitsberg Sanitary Paleon and medical care was provided from Voitsberg.
In 1850, with the constitution of the free municipalities, the independent municipality of Arnstein was founded, which was merged with the municipality of Voitsberg on January 1, 1968 . In the spring of 1922, the construction of the Teigitsch power station Arnstein , which was completed in 1925, began on the Teigitsch . The construction was largely financed from Italy, and the power plant had an output of 21,000 kW upon completion. The local group Arnstein of the Styrian radio club set up the first radio station of the Voitsberg district in Arnstein in autumn 1923 . In the summer of 1924, the Arnstein fire aid station of the Styrian Farmers' Union was set up, which lasted until August 1946. In 1936 there was an Arnstein branch of the Fatherland Front - local group Voitsberg , which at that time had 106 members. In addition there were 46 people who were registered with the Patriotic Defense Formations . In 1925, 1932 and 1939 there were forest fires in which several hectares of forest burned down. In 1938 the order was made that STEWEAG's Arnstein power plant had to set up a factory air raid protection facility. Between 1398 and 1941, a 100 kV line was built from the power plants on the Drau in Schwabegg to Arnstein. On March 19, 1944, the Allies bombed Arnstein, and the Scherlenz farm was badly damaged.
During a severe storm on July 24, 1948, several wooden bridges in the Arnstein area were destroyed, and those to Großwöllmiß were up to a meter deep under water. On January 1, 1968, Arnstein was incorporated into the municipality of Voitsberg .
Population development
Economy and Infrastructure
Arnstein is dominated by agriculture, in the 19th century there were excavations for iron ore, which, however, had too few deposits to be economically mined. In the 19th century, the wood that flowed from Hirschegg over the Gößnitzbach was charred in Arnstein. At the beginning of the 20th century, today's Arnstein power plant was partially built in the Arnstein area.
The Krems stop in Styria of the rapid transit line operated by the Graz-Köflacher Eisenbahn is located in the area of the Arnstein cadastral community. The building of the Voluntary Fire Brigade Krems in Voitsberg is also in the Arnstein area.
Buildings
One of the most remarkable structures in Arnstein is the Arnstein power plant , which was built between 1922 and 1925 . There are also several chapels and wayside shrines in the village. The chapels in the village include the Trinity Chapel, consecrated on May 30, 1926, with a plaque on the outside to commemorate those who died in the First World War. The Lindnerbauerkapelle with a plaque commemorating those who died in World War II was built by the Arnstein Catholic Youth after World War II and inaugurated on September 2, 1951. The Eisnerkreuz, erected in the 17th or 18th century, now serves as a wayside cross. The Hauseggerkreuz was erected in the 1930s as a memorial for a person killed by a lightning strike, and the Koppenkreuz on the road to Krems was erected on the site of an older wooden cross after the Second World War. At Gasthaus Pölzl there is a wayside shrine that was built in 1910 and renovated around 1980.
