Krems is a settlement in the municipality of Voitsberg in the Voitsberg district , Styria . It is located in the cadastral municipality of Thallein and belonged to the municipality of Lobming until January 1, 1968 , before it was incorporated into Voitsberg.

Place name and geography

The name Krems is probably derived from the Indo-European root (s) krem , which means something like to cut and is probably due to the narrow gorge cut through by the Kainach nearby. Another possibility is the derivation from the Celtic krem or akrem , which means sharp .

The place itself is east of Voitsberg an der Kainach and the road to Mooskirchen .

history

Archaeological finds suggest a settlement in the Latène period . Roman stones were also found near Krems Castle . The village was first mentioned in a document in 1151 as Cremese . Further mentions come from the years 1160 as Chremsa and Kremß and 1202 as Krems . The village belonged to the Krems manor until 1848, which also included subjects in Arnstein , Gasselberg , Gößnitz , Großgaisfeld , Kleingaisfeld , Lobming , Muggauberg and Thallein as well as the Breitenbachalm . From 1770 Krems belonged to the advertising district of the Greißenegg Castle .

The hammer mill and iron trader Georg Gamilschegg began building his own hammer mill after receiving permission on April 3, 1788. This was originally planned as a scythe factory , but later became the Kremser sheet metal factory . On January 25, 1848, this factory was bought by Archduke Johann , expanded and modernized with the use of steam engines. The iron was supplied, among other things, via its own station on the Köflacherbahn . Archduke Johann had one of the first 'modern' staff residences built in Styria for factory workers in 1854. In addition, from 1858 there was a company doctor and from 1859 a brother's drawer for the workers of the Krems ironworks . After the death of Archduke Johann in 1859, the work came to the Counts of Meran , who neglected it. For the period around 1870, there is evidence of its own factory school in Krems , which was built by the Vordernberg-Köflacher Montanindustrie-Gesellschaft . In 1898 the operation, which was already out of date at that time, was stopped by the Österreichisch-Alpine Montangesellschaft .

Between the years 1796 and 1848, the Kleine Grazer Briefpost had its own post office in Krems , where letters and parcels were delivered and picked up twice a week. Around this time, the old Meierhof of Krems Castle was converted into a trades house with its own park. Otto Klusemann built a cellulose factory in 1882 , which was the second in Austria at the time. In 1903 Adolf Ruhmann took over the factory and expanded it. In December 1920 the local branch Krems of the Association of Workers of the Chemical Industries in Austria was founded . In 1926 the cellulose factory set up its own volunteer fire brigade . The production of cellulose was finally stopped in 1939. Most of the workers had previously been laid off for lack of sales and funds. The Krems timber structure was later built from the cellulose factory .

From 1930 there were bus connections from Krems to Geistthal , Graz , Köflach , Pack and Voitsberg . In December 1932 the Sport-Verein-Krems was founded , which on April 15, 1934 was transformed into the Athletic-Sportklub Krems-Voitsberg and dissolved again in June 1940. In the 1930s, the first Krems Castle Association was founded . When the governor at the time, Anton Rintelen , came to Voitsberg for a visit in January 1934, swastikas were painted in white on the walls of buildings on the night of January 25 along the main road from Krems to Voitsberg. In March 1934 the Krems local group of the Austrian Homeland Security was founded - towards Starhemberg , and in 1936 there was a separate local group of the Fatherland Front Voitsberg . In July 1938, activities of a communist resistance cell in the cellulose factory were reported and in the summer of 1941 there were arrests in the woodworks, as a result of which several communist resistance fighters were executed. Five people were killed and several houses were badly damaged when five Allied fighter-bombers were dropped on January 3, 1945. On April 27 of the same year, the then director of the Krems timber construction and a master carpenter undertook a "patrol" on 47 escaped concentration camp prisoners, during which several prisoners were mistreated and killed.

In February 1950 the fruit growing association Krems und Umgebung was founded and in 1953 the volunteer fire brigade Krems was set up in a new fire station , which was further expanded in 1973. From the 1970s onwards, commercial and industrial companies settled in the greater Krems area, which led to a merging with the urban area of Voitsberg . In 1976 the municipality of Voitsberg in Krems built its own kindergarten, which was replaced by a new building in October 2000. The Krems-Thallein branch of Raiffeisenbank Voitsberg was opened on May 6, 1978 . In the same year the Sparkasse Voitsberg-Köflach set up a branch in Krems, which was closed again in 2011. In 1993, the Krems Castle Association was re-established.
