Gawrilow-Jam ( Russian Гаврилов-Ям ) is a city in Yaroslavl Oblast ( Russia ) with 17,791 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located about 45 km south of the Oblast capital Yaroslavl on the Kotorosl , a right tributary of the Volga .

Gavrilow-Jam is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

The city is the end of a 20 km long railway line branching off the Trans-Siberian Railway near Semibratowo north of Rostov .

The place was first mentioned in 1545 as a settlement of Gavrilowo on the lands of the Trinity Monastery of Sergiev Posad 7 kilometers from the Rostov- Suzdal tract (the tract was referred to as military, post and trade highways in ancient Russia). The name is derived from Gavriil , popularly Gavrila , Russian for Gabriel .

In 1580 the place is called Gawrilowski Jam , which indicates the presence of a Jam , which in the Russian relay horse enclosure for post stations or the stations themselves were designated. Later the place was called Gavrilow-Jamskaja sloboda , since the end of the 18th century Gavrilow-Jam .

On August 5, 1922, the place received the status of an urban-type settlement and on December 26, 1938 city rights.

economy

In addition to a linen weaving mill , which was founded in 1872, there are two machine factories, a printing works, as well as companies in the building materials and food industries.

One of the machine factories is AGAT , founded in 1968 , today a public limited company , which u. a. Manufactures assemblies for aircraft engines.
