Poschechonje ( Russian Пошехонье ) is a small town in the Yaroslavl Oblast ( Russia ) with 6084 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in the Mologa-Scheksna lowland about 150 kilometers northwest of the Oblast capital Yaroslavl on the Sogoscha , near its confluence with the Rybinsk Reservoir .

Poschechonje is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

The nearest train station is Rybinsk on the Yaroslavl – Bologoje route, 65 kilometers southwest. The R104 Rybinsk – Cherepovets road runs through Poschechonje along the eastern bank of the Rybinsk reservoir.

history

The monastery village of Pertoma existed in the place of today's town in the 17th century . In 1777 it received town charter under its current name, which means roughly the area on the Shekhon , where Schechon is an old name of the Sheksna river , into which the Sogosha flowed not far before the Rybinsk reservoir was created.

Since the 18th century, the craft of manufacturing gold leaf and thin silver and aluminum foils developed in Poschechonje . B. for the production of military decorations.

From 1918 to 1992 the city was called Poschechonje-Volodarsk after the revolutionary V. Volodarsky (1891-1918).

Culture and sights

The Holy Trinity Cathedral ( Троицкий собор / Troitski sobor) from 1717 and the Church of the Assumption of Mary ( Успенская церковь / Uspenskaja zerkow) from 1822 have been preserved in Poschechonje .

The Andrianow Assumption Monastery ( Адрианов-Успенский монастырь / Andrianow-Uspenski monastyr) is five kilometers from Poschechonje, near the village of Andrianowa Sloboda .

economy

In Poschechonje there are companies in the food industry (dairy) and timber industry. After the city's well-known in Russia cheese Poschechonjer cheese ( Poschechonski Syr ) named, but which is currently not produced in Poshekhonye.
