The brothers Otto GmbH & Co. KG (formerly Gebr Otto -. Weaving and twisting and brothers Otto, mechanical twisting and power plant ) is a company incorporated in 1901 spinning in Dietenheim in Alb-Donau-Kreis .

history

The history of the family business in the fourth generation began at the Dietenheim location with a twisting mill and was expanded to include dyeing , mercerization and ring spinning after the Second World War in view of the increasing demand for textiles . In 1953, Plant 2 in Unterbalzheim was put into operation. At that time, the ever increasing and still ongoing globalization after the Second World War led to a total upheaval and relocation of the production locations of the textile industry to the so-called Third World . The 50-year adjustment process ended with the result that only a few spinning mills have retained their location in the former textile state of Baden-Württemberg . In Dietenheim alone there were still over 1,000 textile jobs in the 1970s. Otto decided against relocating production abroad and instead opted for a premium and niche strategy in order to survive on the international market. For this purpose, the current managing director and studied textile engineer Andreas Merkel built up a cooperation that has existed since 2009 with the University of Ulm and the Reutlingen University of Applied Sciences , which is also located in a former textile stronghold. The spinning mill is now one of the most modern plants in Europe.

Products

The spinning and twisting mill in Unterbalzheim and the dye works in Dietenheim produce yarns for the clothing industry that are 100 percent produced in Germany. Furthermore, hygiene products are manufactured and sold under the label "Otto Medicare" . The second pillar of the company is the development and introduction of sustainable, holistic product concepts under the label " Sustainable Concepts". In 2015 the company produced 3000 tons of cotton yarn and twisted 1000 tons of yarn. 900 tons were dyed and 75 tons were mercerized. The buyers of the yarn include branded clothing manufacturers in the middle to upper segment from Germany and neighboring countries, such as Trigema , Brax Leineweber , Eterna and Lacoste, including various underwear manufacturers such as Mey , Falke , Schiesser , Triumph and Speidel as well as the children's clothing brand Petit Bateau from Groupe Yves Rocher . Another business area of the traditional company is the development and manufacture of technical textiles .

The “Sustainable Concepts” division of Gebrüder Otto GmbH & Co. KG has been involved in the development and introduction of sustainable, holistic product concepts since 1998. One example of this is the use of kapok as a raw material for yarn production. In 2006 Otto succeeded in processing kapok, which was previously considered impossible to be spun, together with cotton into a yarn. Kapok fiber is a hollow fiber, six times lighter than cotton, it is the lightest natural fiber in the world. Kapok trees grow wild in all tropical countries and do not need to be watered, fertilized or treated with pesticides.

The company's sustainability concept also includes recycling processes developed in-house. Gebrüder Otto processes waste such as faulty yarns , bobbin threads or selvedges and lets them flow back into the production process. This production process is called "Recot²" . The name is made up of the parts Re for recycled (reused), cot for cotton and the factor 2 for the potential for saving water. When producing one kilogram of cotton, depending on the mixing ratio, up to 10,000 liters of water can be saved. Another field of innovation in which Otto is active is the attempt to produce yarns from recycled carbon-plastic fibers, which has already been achieved in some cases.

Real laboratory and textile city

Production in Dietenheim is to be made transparent in a “ real laboratory ” . In this way, consumers can assess the quality and recognize the higher standard for organic products . The "Reallabor" project for the sustainable transformation of the textile industry at the two universities of Ulm University (Chair for Sustainable Management) and Reutlingen University is funded by the Baden-Württemberg state government with 960,000 euros.
