A prison riot is a riot and protest by prisoners in correctional facilities , police stations , prison camps and the like, which usually lead to violent clashes with the guards and possibly also with other groups of prisoners. Sometimes prisoners manage to break out . Another form of protest is the hunger strike . In science, the connection between riots and prison conditions, for example overcrowding, is examined in particular.

1927 Folsom State Prison Folsom , California On November 24, 1927, there was a two-day prison riot. Two guards and three inmates were killed. Five of the ringleaders were convicted of murder and executed in 1930.
1930 Rangoon Central Jail Rangoon , Myanmar The uprising began on June 24, 1930 in the wake of other unrest. 34 inmates (out of a total of around 2000) were shot.
1932 HMP Dartmoor Princetown , UK The uprising broke out on January 24, 1932. The inmates had the prison under control for about an hour and a half. Fires broke out. One prisoner was killed.
1943 Treblinka extermination camp Treblinka , Poland The Treblinka uprising took place on August 2, 1943. Thousands of prisoners were then murdered.
1943 Sobibor extermination camp Sobibór , Poland The Sobibór uprising took place on October 14, 1943. As part of an uncoordinated escape, around 100 inmates managed to escape permanently. They joined the partisans.
1944 Sachsenhausen concentration camp Oranienburg , Germany On October 11, 1944, 27 people, including the communists Ernst Schneller , Mathias Thesen , Rudolf Henning and Gustl Sandtner , were shot because they had prepared a prisoner revolt.
1950 Bautzen I Prison Bautzen , Germany Hunger strike March 13-15, 1950 and uprising March 31, 1950 .
1953 Vorkuta labor camp Vorkuta , Siberia The Vorkuta uprising developed from June 30, 1953. On August 1, 1953, the uprising was suppressed using machine guns. Officially 42 dead and 135 injured, eyewitnesses speak of hundreds of victims.
1971 Attica Correctional Facility Attica , New York State One employee was killed in a prison uprising from September 9-13, 1971, and 42 other people, including 32 prisoners and 10 employees, were killed in the crackdown on the uprising. There were also over 80 injured.
1980 Penitentiary of New Mexico Santa Fe County , New Mexico The uprising lasted 36 hours from February 2-3, 1980. 33 inmates were tortured, mutilated and killed by inmates.
1986 Penal Castro Castro Lima , Peru Over 100 prisoners were shot dead by the police and the military in June 1986.
1990 Leopoldov prison Leopoldov , Slovakia On March 15, 1990, a revolt began. Over 200 inmates kept themselves barricaded for about two weeks. One person was killed.
1990 HM Prison Manchester Manchester , UK The uprising lasted from April 1st to April 25th, 1990. There were 2 dead, 147 guards injured and 47 prisoners injured.
1992 Casa de Detenção de São Paulo São Paulo , Brazil The Carandiru massacre followed a prisoner riot on October 2, 1992. State police officers killed 111 prisoners in the crackdown.
1995 Serkadji prison Algiers , Algeria A riot that began on February 21, 1995 resulted in about 1,000 detainees escaping. Twelve guards were injured and four hostages were killed, as well as one person from the storming security forces. According to official information, 96 prisoners were killed in the storming of the prison.
1996 Abu Salim prison Tripoli , Libya Following an uprising from June 28 to 29, 1996, around 1200 prisoners were shot dead by a special unit.
2001 Qala-i-Jangi Balkh Province , Afghanistan In the Qala-i-Jangi uprising between November 25 and December 1, 2001, up to 600 Taliban, 40 Afghan security forces and one US soldier died.
2012 Apodaca prison Apodaca , Mexico A riot in Apodaca prison in February 2012 left 40 dead. Different groups of inmates had attacked each other with knives.
2016 Centro Preventivo de Reinserción Social Topo Chico Monterrey , Mexico On the night of February 10-11, 2016, at least 52 people were killed in a clash between two gangs, in which the staff immediately intervened.
2019 Centro de Recuperação Regional de Altamira Altamira , Brazil 62 people were killed in a prison riot in late July 2019. 16 of them were beheaded by fellow inmates.
