Georg Benedikt Freiherr von Ogilvy , Baron Ogilvy de Muirtown, (born March 19, 1651 in Scheltschitz in Moravia , † October 8, 1710 in Danzig ) was a Royal Polish and Electoral Saxon General Field Marshal of Scottish descent.

Life

origin

Ogilvy was the son of Baron George Jacob Ogilvy , commandant of the Brno fortress Spielberg (Czech: Špilberk ). Georg Jacob was the son of Francis Ogilvy, of Smiddyhill, and grandson of James Ogilvy, 5th Lord Ogilvy of Airlie from the Scottish Ogilvy clan .

The rise in the imperial Habsburg service

He joined in 1664 as a thirteen year old pikemen in the regiment of the Imperial General Leslie one, was then Gefreyt-Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant and Ensign, until he finally received its own company. In 1677 he became colonel sergeant in the regiment of Prince Ludwig of Baden. After taking the position of trenchée major at the siege of Ofen for some time , he was appointed lieutenant colonel in 1683 and commander of the Belgrade Fortress in 1689 .

In 1691 he received his own regiment from Emperor Leopold I as colonel and in the following year the rank of Real Imperial Chamberlain . In 1696, meanwhile General Field Sergeant, he became the commander of Tokaj . In 1702 he was ordered to the Imperial and Imperial Army on the Rhine, where he a. a. took part in the siege of the city of Landau in the Palatinate under the general command of Emperor Joseph I. In the following year, 1703, he was appointed General-Feld-Marshal-Lieutenant and in this capacity was added to General-Feldmarschall Graf Traun.

General in Imperial Russian service

During his visit to Vienna in 1698, Tsar Peter the Great became aware of Ogilvy and called him to Russia . With the permission of the Emperor, Ogilvy followed this call and, as the successor to the late General François Le Fort, became Imperial Russian General Field Marshal and commanding General-en-Chef of all Russian troops . In this capacity he was used in the Great Northern War . In 1704 he commanded the camp during the siege of Narva and was able to conquer the city on August 9th. On the 16th of the same month he captured Ivanogrod Castle . For these achievements he received the Order of the White Eagle from King August II of Poland .

Royal Polish and Electoral Saxon General Field Marshal

After completing his service in Russia, the Polish King and Saxon Elector August appointed him Field Marshal General, Real Secret Council and President of the Secret War Council. He also gave him a regiment on foot and one on horseback and a few other privileges. At the same time he also got a job as an imperial general field equipment master.

In 1708 he acquired the dominions of Zahorzan and Taschau in Bohemia , both of which were located near Leitmeritz. After he entered Poland with the Electoral Saxon army shortly afterwards to besiege Danzig , he died there on October 10th (according to other sources on the 8th) 1710.

family

He was married to Maria Anastasia von Zuckmantel zu Brumath († June 4, 1695). The couple's only son, Hermann Carl von Ogilvy , became his universal heir.
