Georg von Oppen (General)

Karl Georg Friedrich von Oppen (born November 7, 1795 in Aschersleben , † March 5, 1876 in Hasseldorf ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

Georg was the son of the Prussian lieutenant general Adolf Friedrich von Oppen (1762-1832) and his first wife Katharina Wilhelmine, born von Faggyas (1764-1815). His half-brother Karl (1824-1896) also became a Prussian lieutenant general.

Military career

Oppen joined the Prussian Army's light guard cavalry regiment as a dragoon on January 10, 1813 and was promoted to second lieutenant until early July 1813 . During the Wars of Liberation he fought near Bautzen , Großbeeren , Leipzig , Ober-Graupen, Chaumont, Chalons, Vitry and Arcis-sur-Aube . For Haynau , Oppen was awarded the Iron Cross II Class and the Order of St. George V Class.

On February 21, 1815 he was transferred to the Guard Dragoons Regiment and rose to Rittmeister and squadron chief by mid-April 1832 . In this position he received the Order of St. Vladimir IV Class at the end of September 1834 . Oppen was promoted to major on April 7, 1842 and aggregated to his regiment on March 22, 1845 . On August 24, 1848 he was appointed commander of the 10th Hussar Regiment . On September 26, 1849, his head of the regiment awarded Oppen the Commander's Cross, Second Class of the Order of Henry the Lion , and on September 26, 1850, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. He was awarded the Order of St. John on January 9, 1851 and was promoted to colonel on November 13, 1851 . Oppen took his leave on March 8, 1853 with a pension and the right to wear his regimental uniform. On May 6, 1865 he was given the character of Major General. He died on March 5, 1876 in Hasseldorf (Demmin district).

General Count Waldersee wrote in his assessment in 1847: “Major von Oppen has always been a capable and hardworking officer, who is to be granted that he does not remain too long in his current position as an aggregate staff officer. Since he is a man of honor in every respect and of good moral leadership, he is also suitable as a regular staff officer. "

family

Oppen married on June 12, 1828 in Berlin Karoline von Pritzelwitz († 1870), a daughter of the captain of the artillery Joachim Heinrich von Pritzelwitz (1766-1812). The couple's only child was Gustav Adolf Heinrich (1829–1844); he died as a cadet in Potsdam.
