Georges Leekens (born May 18, 1949 in Mechelen ) is a Belgian football coach and former player.

Career

Leekens began his professional career in 1970 at CS Schaerbeek . His sharp tackle earned him the nickname "Mac the Knife". In 1972 he moved to Club Brugge , for which he played for nine years. During this time he was five times Belgian champion and once Belgian cup winner. He then played for Sint-Niklase SK for three years before ending his playing career.

In 1984 Leekens started as a coach at Cercle Brugge , with whom he won the Belgian Cup that same season. In 1987 he moved to RSC Anderlecht , but was released in February 1988. After a season at KV Kortrijk , he returned to Club Bruges, with whom he won the Belgian championship title in 1990 and the Belgian Cup and the Supercup in 1991. In 1991 Leekens went to KV Mechelen , followed by the Turkish club Trabzonspor , again the Club Bruges and Sporting Charleroi . 1995 Leekens came to Excelsior Mouscron , with whom he rose from the second to the first division. During the 1996/97 season he left Mouscron to coach the Belgian national football team. Although he qualified for the 1998 World Cup in France , Belgium was eliminated in the preliminary round. Preparations for the European Football Championship in 2000 were not successful either, and after losing at home to Finland , he was released in August 1999.

Then Leekens worked as a coach at SK Lokeren , Roda Kerkrade , for the Algerian national team , Excelsior Mouscron, KAA Gent and from 2007 to the end of March 2009 again at KSC Lokeren. In March 2009 he signed with the Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal , but was released after a month. From June 2009 to 2010 he again trained the KV Kortrijk. On May 11, 2010 he was introduced as the new coach of the Belgian national soccer team. In April 2011, the KBFV and Leeskens agreed on an extension of the contract period up to and including the 2014 World Cup . On May 13, 2012, Leekens announced, to the surprise of the KBFV, that he was resigning from his coaching position without notice in order to take over from Christoph Daum at first division club Bruges . He signed a three-year contract with the Belgian runners-up, where he had previously worked as a player and coach. On November 4, 2012, Club Bruges separated after four defeats in a row from Leekens. He signed with the Tunisian Football Association on March 27, 2014 . He won his debut as coach of the " Adler Karthagos " away against World Cup participants South Korea 1-0. The contract was terminated on June 28, 2015.

Since October 27, 2016, Leekens coached the Algerian national team for the second time. Immediately after the preliminary round at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations , he resigned from his post.

On October 30, 2017, he became the coach of the Hungarian national team . After four unsuccessful preparatory games in Budapest against Kazakhstan (2: 3) and Scotland (0: 1), then against Belarus (1: 1) in Brest and finally again in Budapest against Australia (1: 2) it was already on June 19 Announced his release in 2018.
