George Morin (born October 1, 1831 in Neustift near Freising , Upper Bavaria , † June 18, 1918 in Munich - Haidhausen ) was a German publicist , journalist and poet .

Life

George Morin was born in Neustift near Freising in 1831 as the son of a sergeant of the 2nd Bavarian Cuirassier Regiment . He attended elementary school in Freising and, due to his father's official transfers, the Latin schools in Landshut and Munich . Finally, the father was transferred to Germersheim in the Bavarian Palatinate in the position of a customs collector .

As a young man, Morin made the acquaintance of Ludwig Uhland , who in turn recommended him to the doctor and writer Justinus Kerner in Weinsberg . In order to earn a living, he initially took on a position in the government of Lower Bavaria in Landshut, then moved to Straubing as an editor in 1864 and finally went to Munich. Here he published the weekly political and literary paper Germania and was editor of the German national liberal Bavarian Landbote until May 1875 . At the same time he was a freelancer for a German newspaper in London and for North American journals, including the German-language New Yorker Abend-Zeitung . The cultural-historical articles about Munich and Bavaria, which he provided for these papers, met with the benevolent interest of King Ludwig II of Bavaria .

In 1875 he worked as an editor of the Passauer Zeitung , from 1884 on again of the Bavarian Landbote in Munich. Morin gave lectures and published his own poems and stories, biographical essays, historical considerations, contributions to travel guides as well as texts on a festival and a one-act play performed in Munich in 1871 . Morin was married to Elise Braunhofer († 1889) from 1859. Their son Heinrich Morin worked as a professor in Munich and worked a. a. as an illustrator of scientific publications , including a natural history for secondary schools (1891), Brehms Tierleben (from 1892) and Heinrich Marzell's books on medicinal plants and herbs (1924, 1935).

Morin was the holder of the Ludwig Medal , the large gold medal from King Oskar II of Sweden and other awards from Queen Josefine of Sweden and from Duke Max in Bavaria .
