Life

Göcking attended the Lyceum in Schöningen , the cathedral school in Halberstadt and the grammar school in Quedlinburg . On February 12, 1728 matriculated he at the University of Helmstedt and on 22 April 1730 of the University of Halle for the study of theology .

In 1732 Göcking stayed in the house of the Prussian secret finance, war and domain council Christian von Herold in Berlin and began to collect material for a chronicle of the emigration of Protestants expelled by Salzburg Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian in 1731/32 . Already the first volume of his emigration history, published two years later, shows that Göcking still had numerous other sources. He had good contacts to Gotthilf August Francke in Halle , whom he knew from his student days. Documents that Johann Friedrich Breuer , the pastor of the Salzburg colony in East Prussia , sent to Gotthilf August Francke with the express request not to print them, can be found in Göcking's chronicle. In addition, Göcking won over the senior pastor and pastor at the St. Anna Church in Augsburg , Samuel Urlsperger , as a supporter of his publication.

Göcking's two-volume history of emigration developed into the most popular contemporary chronicle of emigration from Salzburg from a Protestant perspective.
