history

Population development

The place name Warnungs was first mentioned in the year 1200 as "Warmundes", whereby the place name is a genitive place name derived from the personal name Waramunt . The village originally belonged to the rulership of Kirchberg am Walde along with its land, local and regional jurisdiction , although in the Middle Ages, stately rights were temporarily granted to Zwettl Abbey through donations . Zwettl Abbey owned five farmsteads and the village mill in 1280, and six fiefs in 1321, a desolate farmstead and the mill. In 1596 there was a peasant uprising by the Warning farmers against the rule of Kirchberg, with the Reichsherold calling on the peasants to lay down their arms on January 1, 1597.

Up until December 31, 1971, Warnungs was a separate municipality to which Ottenschlag also belonged. On January 1, 1972, the municipality of Warnungs was dissolved and Warnungs was incorporated into the market town of Vitis, Ottenschlag came to the city of Zwettl .

Warnungs originally belonged to Kirchberg am Wald, but after the establishment of the Süßenbach parish in 1784 it fell into its parish. As a result, a chapel was built in 1874, which was consecrated to Saint Fabian and Saint Sebastian. The mill, which was still in operation in 1928, was shut down like all other mills in the community.

The growth of the place was low over the centuries. In 1590/91 the village consisted of 18 houses, in 1900 there were 23. In 2000 the place had shrunk to 22 houses, whereby the number of inhabitants has been declining since the beginning of the 20th century.

In the political field, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) dominates the election results, analogous to the municipal level. The ÖVP achieved 85% in the local council election in 2010 in the Warnungs district (community result: 70%) and the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) 15% (community result: 30%). In 2005 the ÖVP had only achieved 64%.

Buildings

The village of Warnungs is a double-row village on sloping terrain with a ridge-like broadening. Some of the three and four-sided courtyards have simple plastered facades. The two-bay local chapel, built in 1874, was built in the neo-Gothic style and has a three-sided apse. Externally, the stone portal and the pointed arched, faced windows and a roof turret also emerge. The altar of the chapel dates from the 19th century, the altar panel shows the coronation of Mary. In addition to the chapel, the Gebhartsmühle with a residential building from the second quarter of the 19th century and the nearby Wegkapelle, also from the 19th century, are also worth mentioning.
