society

Giovani dos Santos is one of three sons of the former Brazilian striker Geraldo Francisco dos Santos (* 1962, short name Zizinho ). His older brother Eder and his younger brother Jonathan dos Santos are or were also professional footballers. “Gio” played together with the two of them in his father's soccer school in Monterrey and won his first “international” title at the age of twelve: in 2001 he won an U-12 junior tournament in Dallas . The father recognized his son's talent early on and let him do a trial session at CF Monterrey , a Mexican professional club, shortly after the tournament . The club accepted him and dos Santos played there until a short time later he took part in a youth tournament in France .

Here was the FC Barcelona , his future employer, present with a youth team. After dos Santos excelled in the game against the Catalans, club officials contacted Giovani's parents. They agreed to the move, and just a year after the tournament he moved to the FC Barcelona youth academy. He took both brothers with him for trial training, but only Jonathan was accepted. Together, Jonathan and Giovani went through the youth teams of the Spanish top club, but not in one team, as Giovani always played one youth higher than their peers usually do.

In 2006 he came to the B team of Barça , for which he met four times in five games. During the preparation for the season he was also allowed to play for the A team once. In his first game he scored a goal against the Danish club Aarhus GF . For the 2007/08 season he was finally promoted to the A team together with Bojan Krkić , for which he made his debut on September 2, 2007 against Athletic Bilbao . Giovani dos Santos made his first European appearance on 19 September 2007 when he came on for Xavi in the 79th minute of the UEFA Champions League group game against Olympique Lyon . On December 12, 2007 he also scored his first goal in the European Cup when he scored 1-1 in the last group game of the UEFA Champions League against VfB Stuttgart in the 36th minute. The game ended with a 3-1 for FC Barcelona.

For the 2008/09 season, dos Santos moved to Tottenham Hotspur ; his contract runs until 2013. In March 2009 he was loaned to Ipswich Town until the end of the season, to Galatasaray Istanbul in the 2009/10 winter break and to Racing Santander in the 2010/11 winter until the end of the season .

On August 31, 2012 dos Santos moved to the Spanish first division club RCD Mallorca . Since Mallorca had to go into the second division after the end of the 2012/13 season, Dos Santos signed a three-year contract with the newly promoted Villarreal CF in July 2013 .

In the summer of 2015, he moved to Major League Soccer for LA Galaxy . He made his debut for his new employer on August 9, 2015 in the league game against the Seattle Sounders , in which he also scored his first goal. The franchise separated from him on March 1, 2019.

National team

Dos Santos took part in various tournaments with the youth national teams of Mexico . With the U-17 he was world champion in 2005 and also voted the second best player of the tournament behind the Brazilian Anderson . With his assists, which initiated half of all Mexican goals in the tournament, he made a large part of the triumph. Two years later he took part in the U-20 World Cup in Canada , where he reached the quarterfinals.

On September 9, 2007 Dos Santos made his debut against Panama for the Mexican national team. On June 11, 2010, he played his first World Cup final game in the opening game of the 2010 World Cup against South Africa (1-1). In addition to Thomas Müller (Germany) and André Ayew (Ghana), he was nominated for the choice of the best young player of the tournament, which however, Müller won.

In 2012 he took part with the Olympic team at the Olympic Games in London , where Mexico won the gold medal for the first time. In the final, however, he was unable to participate due to an injury suffered in the semifinals. In the five previous games he scored three goals, including the game against Gabon as the first player to score two goals after a substitution. His teammates dedicated the second goal in the final to him. For Mexico this was the only gold medal in London.

In 2014 he took part with the Mexican national soccer team in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where Mexico was eliminated in the round of 16 on June 29, 2014 against the Netherlands at the Estadio Castelao Fortaleza stadium. On June 13, 2014 in the group game against Cameroon, he was elected Man of the Match .
