Giulia Marie Becker (born January 22, 1991 ) is a German author , television presenter and musician . She gained fame through the television program Neo Magazin Royale and her songs "Verdammte Schei * e" and "Monstertruck".

Career

Giulia Becker grew up as the daughter of a graphic designer and a building materials dealer in "a village behind a small town behind Siegen " and studied media studies at the University of Siegen . She has lived in Cologne since 2013 .

Training and first public work

After graduating from high school, she did an internship in dramaturgy , then in the production design of the telenovela Sturm der Liebe . She has enjoyed writing since she was still at school; the leader of a writing workshop in Siegen succeeded in persuading her to present her stories on stage. With her first text, she qualified for the German-language Poetry Slam championship in 2009, where she made it through to the final round.

Like all participants in a Twitter seminar at the university in April 2014, she created a Twitter profile for herself; for one year she initially only read other people's tweets . In 2015 she began to tweet herself as "Sister Ewald", her "impulsive, pointed and relentlessly self- deprecating comments" according to the Süddeutsche Zeitung , with a style in a "mixture of grumpy and laconic, coarse and intelligent" were sometimes retweeted a thousand times and thus led to over 53,700 followers . (As of April 2019)

Neo Magazine Royale

In the summer of 2015, Jan Böhmermann asked if anyone knew who was behind her Twitter account - a week later Giulia Becker began an internship at the production company of the late-night show Neo Magazin Royale . Becker had one of her first appearances on the show in the fall of 2015 in episode 24 as “Coco”, co-founder of the fictional start-up Kein Keks , which sold Prinzenrolle filling straight and removed the nuts from Toffifee pralines. Since January 2016, Giulia Becker has been the only gag writer alongside five to eight male colleagues in the team of authors at Neo Magazin Royale.

In December 2016 the first complete music video by Giulia Becker appeared in Neo magazine Royale. Becker sang to the melody of Michael Jackson's song Earth Song , who had five years of lessons in pop singing, but said she could not read music. Becker's piece "Verdammte Schei * e", which she sings in the style of Adele herself, is about her everyday editorial life, where she only distinguishes one thing from her male colleagues: her vagina . In the video - according to the online magazine Bento, a cynical reckoning with everyday sexism and macho behavior in male-dominated professions - there are also other prominent people such as Hazel Brugger , Ina Müller , Nora Tschirner , Maren Kroymann , Katrin Bauerfeind , Cordula Stratmann , Annette Frier , Olivia Jones or Jeannine Michaelsen to see who stand up for the topic and show with their hands an upside-down Merkel diamond as a symbol for the vagina.

The video, which went viral as the first piece of music in the satire show without the participation of Böhmermann, with over 800,000 views, was seen by the news magazine Stern as the start of a new women's movement . Half a year later, Der Spiegel took the song in its print edition as a hook for the fact that " feminism ... is suddenly back in", "the new women's movement" belongs to "pop culture". The weekly newspaper Die Zeit asked Giulia Becker about appropriate reactions to sexist remarks from a colleague; the Süddeutsche Zeitung saw her as a “feminism icon”. As a freelance journalist, she also wrote articles e.g. B. for the time .

In addition to her role as a writer, Giulia Becker appeared in various other episodes of the late night show, such as B. in episode 34/2015 ("Hunter of the lost bald head") as employee of the month , in episode 50 (" Children's urine destroys Berlin") with column Column column , in episode 74 ("Smoldering fire in Kebapland") in Big Tits - that Equality magazine u. a. In episode 99 (“Shrumpeloma auffa Escape”) Becker sang the piece “Monstertruck”, in which she self-ironically addresses her experiences as a person without model dimensions.
