God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You II is a song by the American rock band Kiss that was recorded in 1991 for the soundtrack to the film Bill & Ted's Crazy Journey into the Future . The title reached the top ten of the charts as a single release in many countries .

History of origin

The track was originally written as God Gave Rock and Roll to You by Russ Ballard , in 1972 it was the opening track on the album In Deep by the band Argent , of which Ballard was a member. The original length of the title was 6:44 minutes.

James Iovine, head of the music label Interscope , wanted this title on the soundtrack for the film, but he had the idea that Kiss should record the song for it. Iovine hired producer Bob Ezrin to realize this idea. Ezrin accepted the job as the time frame (five days) and budget were reasonable.

The song was revised by Stanley, Simmons and Ezrin and received new lyrics, only the chorus and parts of the second verse remained. Because of the massive changes, the song was renamed God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You II , after which it was included in the film's soundtrack. Kiss drummer Eric Carr was operated on for a tumor in the heart in April 1991 and could not play, but had recovered enough by this point to record the backing vocals for the title.

The role of drummer for the title was taken over by Eric Singer , who had previously played on two Black Sabbath albums , as a drummer for Badlands and on some singles by Gary Moore . He had also played drums for demo recordings by Paul Stanley for the Kiss album Hot in the Shade and had also been the drummer on his solo tour in 1989.

The band acquired the release rights for the song after the recording in order to be able to publish the song on a Kiss album.

"With" God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You "we wrote a song for a cool film [...] and at the same time we were able to find out whether we could still work together as a team. Gene, Paul and I picked up exactly where we left off in New York - we saw each other more like family than friends - and really enjoyed our collaboration. "

- Bob Ezrin

“Interscope Records asked us if we would do the song. To be honest, nobody can remember the original version, except for the chorus. When I listen to Argent's version, I can't even tell exactly what the hell he's about; they sing about flowers, trees and snakes. We told the label we would do it, but for that we would have to rewrite it. "

- Paul Stanley
