Ioannis Goumas ( Greek Ιοάννης Γκούμας , born May 24, 1975 in Ampelonas, Larisa ) is a former Greek football player and current coach.

Career

Born in Thessaly near Larisa , the central defender is one of many Greek players today who emerged from the youth academies of Panathinaikos Athens . In 1994 Goumas made the leap into the men's team and has been a mainstay in the defense of the traditional Greek club ever since. From 2004 to 2005 and 2006 to 2008 Goumas was the captain of his team, with which he celebrated three championships and two national cup wins. With Panathinaikos, Goumas has played 64 European Cup games and is the club's record holder.

1999 Goumas made his debut for the first time in an international match against Finland for the Greek national team . Before that, he completed a total of 21 international matches for the Greek U-21s between 1995 and 1997 . Since then he has been a regular member of the squad and was therefore also part of the team that sensationally won the European football championship in Portugal in 2004 under coach Otto Rehhagel , but where he was not used.

A year later he took part in the Confederations Cup in Germany in 2005 , where Goumas was allowed to play two games, but the Greeks were eliminated in the preliminary round.

In 2008 he was called up to the squad of the Greeks for the European Football Championship in Austria and Switzerland in 2008 , but was not used. He made 45 international appearances but did not score a goal.

In 2009 Goumas left after 15 years, 277 first division games and scored 27 goals the club.
