Grabby Award
The Grabby Awards (formally also known as the Adult Erotic Gay Video Awards ) are American awards given in the porn film industry.
The awards are given annually to recognize the work of the gay porn film industry. The Grabby Awards were first given in 1991 by the Gay Chicago Magazine in Chicago .
history
Beginnings
The first Grabby Awards were first given in 1991 by listing at the end of the last issue of the year of Gay Chicago Magazine . The prizes awarded in the first year included, in addition to the more common categories, prizes for Burnout of the Year , Comeback of the Year and Surprise of the Year . According to Hank “Big Daddy” Ferguson, the founder of Gay Chicago Magazine and creator of Grabbys, the awards were meant to recognize the previous year's videos, which he thought deserved special attention for a variety of reasons.
Over the years, prices then continued to develop. As early as 1992, traditional award categories such as Best Video of the Year and Best Screenplay were added. A year later, at the third Grabby Awards , Falcon Studios and Kristen Bjorn were awarded two prizes in the same category ( Best Video of the Year ) for the first time. For the award of the book Gay Sex: A Manual for Men Who Love Men , the Pull-Lister Prize category was launched in 1993 .
In 1994 other more traditional categories were added, such as Best Director , Best International Video and Best Sex Scene , but the "Whopper Award" was also given to Canadian porn actor Kevin Dean for his particularly large penis . (According to reports, these measures cm in length 28 to 30) In 1995 the category was Best Cum Shot in Hot Shots renamed.
First ceremonial award ceremonies
On May 29, 1999 ( Memorial Day weekend ), the graves for the previous year were awarded for the first time in a public ceremony. At this point in time, Chicago had been home to the International Mr. Leather (IML) for 20 years and its founder Chuck Renslow had proposed that the awarding of the Grabbys be added to the program of the IML weekend, which attracts several thousand visitors.
The award ceremony was also a fundraiser for the Reimer Foundation, “a non-profit organization that promotes safe sex behavior through education and advertising campaigns. The organization provides informational materials and produces videos and other materials about safer sex. Her community service also includes distributing free condoms ; their services are available internationally. "
The location of this first show event was the event hall of the gay sauna Man’s Country, which was sold out on this occasion . Fans, gay porn actors, directors, and other people from the adult entertainment industry came from across the United States to attend the ceremony. The Chicago-born drag queen Honey West and porn director and drag queen Chi Chi LaRue jointly moderated the event.
Unlike the Gay Video News (GayVN) Awards , which are very similar in content and are only accessible to invited guests and the press, the tickets for the Grabbys are sold to the public. This enables fans, participants and award winners to meet and come into contact with one another. A “People's Choice” category also opens the prize to the general public, although the winners in all other categories are awarded by a jury selected by Gay Chicago Magazine . Another difference to the GayVN Awards is that pornographic video clips for the individual nominations are also shown when the Grabbys are awarded.
In the 1999 show, the so-called "Wall of Fame" was introduced, on which people from the porn industry are honored for their services. The first Wall of Fame honored , among others, the then only recently active porn actor Ken Ryker , the Executive Director of the Men of Odyssey studio Bob East, the co-presenter Chi Chi LaRue and the directors Jim Steel and Toby Ross . Despite his protests, Hank “Big Daddy” Ferguson was also honored as the creator of the Grabbys on the Wall of Fame at the urging of his employees . Chi Chi LaRue was also awarded in the categories Best Ethnic Video and Best Videos (together with another film by Kristen Bjorn ). LaRue commented on the award for the Best Ethnic Video with the words "With 10 hot black stallions and a passive white boy, how can you not win?"
The individual prize trophies were brought onto the stage by scantily clad men, so-called “Trophy Studs” (for example “prize stallions”). There were multiple sexual acts on stage during the show. While porn actor Mitch Allmond his rap -Song Happiness is a Big Cock (dt .: Happiness is a big cock ) submitted that the illustrated Falcon actor Christopher Scott together with the two Trophy Studs Peter Dixon and Robby Taylor this statement by pointing to the Stage practiced oral sex . Honey West and Chi Chi LaRue hosted the show one more time. The event was complemented by the surprise appearance of comedian Judy Tenuta. This time, too, there was sexual activity on stage: Trophy stud Robby Taylor was (unexpectedly) worked with a dildo and when there was another orgy at the end of the show, porn actor Spike ejaculated onto the audience from the stage.
Further development of the awards
In 2001, Honey West and Chi Chi LaRue, Zak Spears and Addison Scott , joined two porn actors as co-presenters for the first time. That year, the Grabby Awards also moved to the Circuit nightclub in the heart of Chicago's gay and lesbian district called Boystown . Again, the list of awards has been partially modified and supplemented; the completely new category Editors Choice Awards is particularly noteworthy . Due to the new, different venue, the participants were usually much more dressed than in the two previous years, and the orgy on the stage at the end of the event was also omitted. The 2003 Grabby Awards also took place at the Circuit , this time the co-presenters of LaRue and West were the porn actors Matthew Rush and Kyle Kennedy. The hard of hearing porn actor Dillon Press translated the event into sign language for the first time .
In 2004, the Grabby Awards moved again, this time to the Park West Theater , a well-known concert and entertainment venue in Chicago. Chris Steele , Michael Brandon and Bret Wolfe appeared as comoders for LaRue and West that year . The following year the Maleflixx.tv People's Choice Award category was added. Tag Adams, Michael Brandon and Zak Spears co-hosted LaRue and West at the event, which was again held at the Park West Theater .
The 2006 Grabby Awards were again held in a new location - this time at the Vic Theater , this time with LaRue and West assisting Rod Barry , Brad Benton , and Chad Hunt . This was the last event that Hank "Big Daddy" Ferguson, the founder of Gay Chicago Magazine and inventor of the Grabby Awards, attended. He died in June 2006.
Change of patronage
In March 2009 it was announced that the Gay Chicago Magazine will no longer present pornographic material after the change of publisher, which means that the basis for the grabbies will no longer apply. The rights to the Grabby Awards now belong to Mark Nagel and Stacy Bridges, two employees of the magazine, who will continue the event.
In January 2009 the Grabbys let the public vote for the first time, which porn actor should support the presenters Chi Chi LaRue , Honey West, Blake Riley and Brent Corrigan as co-presenters. The choice fell on March 10, 2009 on Wolf Hudson . The Grabby Awards ceremony took place on May 23, 2009.
