The population of the place grew, reaching almost 10,000 by 1850. Many people found work in the quarries, boatyards and fishing. For example, Grafton limestone was used to build the Eads Bridge in St. Louis, the railroad bridge in Hannibal, Missouri, and a bridge in Quincy, Illinois . What is now Shafer's Wharf Historic District was one of the fishing centers on the Mississippi River in the 1800s. The old boatyards south of Main Street , where there used to be shops for all kinds of marine equipment along the Mississippi River, are now craft shops and antique shops.
The floods of 1993 destroyed a large part of the city, so that around a third of the residents left the city. The effects of the flood can still be seen today. The population, which was over 1,000 before the flood, could still be reached today.
