Gregory Classen (born August 24, 1977 in Aylsham , Saskatchewan ) is a German - Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Rostock Piranhas since the 2017/18 season .
Career
After Classen first played in his homeland for the Nipawin Hawks in the lower-class Canadian junior league Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League , he moved to Merrimack College in 1998 and played there for the Merrimack College Warriors in Hockey East , a league in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In his first season at college, the center was elected to the all-rookie team and initially stayed for another year.
At the end of the 1999/00 season he signed his first professional contract as a free agent with the Nashville Predators and made his professional debut with their farm team , the Milwaukee Admirals , in the International Hockey League . Then Classen played three years in both the IHL and the American Hockey League , in which the Admirals had moved, and in the National Hockey League , where he was able to achieve 17 scorer points in 90 games. In the 2003/04 season , the left shooter only played in the AHL, but managed to win the regular season and the play-offs with his team and won the Calder Cup .
The attacker then moved to Europe , where he first played for Porin Ässät in the Finnish SM-liiga . In the 2005/06 season Classen returned to the Admirals and again reached the final of the Calder Cup, but signed a contract with the Hamburg Freezers from the German Ice Hockey League after the season . In the next year, however, the Canadian played again in North America, this time for the Manitoba Moose . Here, too, he only stayed one season and then joined the Providence Bruins . After just one game, Classen went on to the San Antonio Rampage , which he also left after 19 games.
Before he could play a game for his new team, the Rochester Americans , the striker signed a contract until the end of the 2008/09 season with the Iserlohn Roosters from the DEL , who signed him as a replacement for the long-term injured Brad Tapper . After the season, Classen received no new contract offer and moved to EHC Basel in the Swiss National League B in October 2009 . However, since he worked for three different teams in Switzerland within a year, he moved back to Germany in summer 2010, where he signed a one-year contract with the Kölner Haien . In August 2013 he signed a two-month contract with ERC Ingolstadt .
For the 2014/15 season, Greg Classen moved to the second German ice hockey league to the Lausitzer Füchsen in Weißwasser. After the end of the season he was seriously injured in a knife attack in Dresden on March 14, 2015 .
Classen left the Füchse after the 2015/16 season and was signed by DEL2 competitor Starbulls Rosenheim at the end of August 2016 .
