history

American Grand Prize (1908-1916)

The first American Grand Prix was held in 1908 at the Savannah-Effingham Raceway in Savannah , Georgia . A 40.434 km long circuit was driven on public roads. Several European drivers took part in the race and the Frenchman Louis Wagner achieved victory in a Fiat . The fastest lap was set by the American Ralph DePalma with an average speed of 112.33 km / h. Two more races in Savannah followed (1910 and 1911). This was followed by driving on public roads in Milwaukee , Wisconsin (1912), Santa Monica , California (1914 and 1916) and San Francisco , California (1915). The race in San Francisco took place on the San Francisco World's Fair Course on the grounds of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition .

Indianapolis 500 and USA Grand Prix in Formula 1

After 1916 the American Grand Prix was discontinued because the European participants stayed away because of the First World War . In the United States, interest in oval races increased after the war , in particular the Indianapolis 500 , which has meanwhile been referred to by the media as the Grand Prize of America . Officially, this race was run as the Grande Épreuve between 1925 and 1949 , but when it was part of the Formula 1 World Championship from 1950 to 1960 it was not referred to as the Grand Prix .

From 1958 onwards the United States hosted Grand Prix again, but this time the name United States Grand Prix was chosen. From 1959 this race was part of the Formula 1 World Championship. In addition, found in the United States with the US Grand Prix East said, the US Grand Prix West and the Grand Prix of Las Vegas further Formula 1 races held. In addition, some street circuit races in the Champ Car Series and the IndyCar Series were referred to as Grand Prix .

For the 2013 season , a Formula 1 world championship race in the US state of New Jersey was announced under the official name Grand Prix of America . On September 28, 2012, it was announced by the FIA that the event would instead be held as the Jersey Grand Prix .
