Großgeschwenda is a district of Probstzella in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia .

geography

Grossgeschwenda is visible from afar at 600 meters above sea level on the so-called Steinerne Heide . This high plateau of the Thuringian Slate Mountains is the watershed between Loquitz and Sormitz . The Talbach rises in the village. The agricultural area covers 625 hectares.

history

The village, now populated with 177 inhabitants, was first mentioned in documents in 1388. From 1388 the village belonged to the Saalfeld monastery . After 1858, 60–70 sheep still had to be given away every year. Cattle breeding had priority because farming was too arduous due to the shallow soil. There were farmers in the village, some weavers, slaters and tailors. The church stands on the northern edge of the village. In 1729 there was the first teacher in the village.

The tourism is promoted as before.
