Around 1500 there was a manor of the Ratzenberger family. Administratively they were subordinate to the County of Orlamünde- Lauenstein and later to the Office of Graefenthal . In 1800 a brewery was named. In 1862 49 families lived up there with 238 people who worked in agriculture and in slate quarries.
With the opening of the Probstzella – Bock-Wallendorf railway on October 15, 1898, Zopten received a railway connection with the station of the same name. On January 22nd, 1997 the tourist traffic in the section Ernstthal-Probstzella was stopped, on July 1st, 2006 this section was closed.
In 1957 it was incorporated into Probstzella.
