geography

Großrettbach is located north of the Apfelstädt river , between the neighboring district of Cobstädt and the villages of Kleinrettbach and Neudietendorf , both districts of the municipality of Nesse-Apfelstädt in the Gotha district in Thuringia . The Rettbach , which comes from Kleinrettbach and flows into the Rot in Cobstädt, flows through the village , which in turn flows into the Apfelstädt in Wandersleben . Großrettbach is well connected in terms of traffic via the Neudietendorf autobahn exit of the A 4 and the federal highway 7 Gotha – Erfurt ( Gamstädt exit ).

About 500 m southeast of the edge of the village is the area natural monument Kleiner See , a terrain depression ( sinkhole ) at a height of 290 m in the area of the Cobstadt plateau. It was created by the natural leaching of gypsum rocks in the subsoil with the result of the formation of cavities and the collapse of the layers of earth above. The district boundary between Großrettbach and Apfelstädt cuts through this shallow pond from west to east. It forms a biotope for some water birds.

history

In the first mentions the place was called Retbeche or Majori Ritebeche . In the Hersfeld Monastery register of properties , the village appears among the donations made by Charlemagne to the monastery until the death of its founder Lullus in 786. In 2011, Großrettbach celebrated its (at least) 1,225th anniversary. In the Thirty Years War the place was so devastated that it remained uninhabited for years. The place in the Gotha office belonged to the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha from 1640 , from 1672 to the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and from 1826 to the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha . Since 1920 he was in the state of Thuringia .

On July 1, 1950, Großrettbach was incorporated into Grabsleben .

Culture and sights

  • The most important attraction of the place is without a doubt the Evangelical-Lutheran village church St. Gotthard ( Lage ). Today's church is the successor to a church that was demolished in 1821. The new church was inaugurated on November 4th of the same year. The construction costs amounted to 3,617 Reichstaler. North-west of the church, directly on the churchyard wall, is the rectory from 1717. With the resignation of the former pastor Michael Göring from Ingersleben and the dissolution of the parish office Ingersleben, the district synod of the Gotha parish decided to assign the parish Großrettbach to the pastorate Apfelstädt .
  • Since February 16, 2011, the place has a renovated community hall in a building from 1888.
  • On the south-western edge of the village ( Lage ) is the Gramborn Fountain, which was restored in 2012, a reservoir spring that has been known for several centuries. Until the 1970s it was an open well with a water depth of 1.50 m and a natural overflow into the nearby Rettbach. The fountain is fed by a meadow area to the southwest. The well was of vital importance for the villagers for centuries, as it always donated water even in dry years. Only in the very dry year of 1893 did the well dry up and only fill up again the following year. After the drainage ditch was backfilled and the tapping point was closed, a handle pump was placed on the well, which, however, rotted over the years. After renovating the well, it was put back into operation in 2012. The well lies at a height of 286 m and has hard to very hard water (25–40 ° dH) due to the calcareous rocks dissolved in the groundwater, the discharge is 0.4 l / s. Due to changes in agriculture - the surface of the fields is no longer plowed as deeply as it used to be - not so much water seeps into the soil when it rains, so that the amount of water now poured out is much less than it used to be. Nevertheless, you can use the handle pump to pump pure water that is at least suitable as drinking water for animals.
  • A public bookcase has been in the bus shelter at the bus stop since April 6, 2019 . The "book stop" is centrally located in the town and offers a wide range of children's and youth literature, non-fiction books on various topics and novels from various authors and genres. It offers the possibility of removing or placing books at any time without any red tape and is supervised on a voluntary basis.

Trivia

The Großrettbachers call themselves and are called Hechelreppschter by the residents of the neighboring communities . One reason is not (currently) clearly known. The statement that the people of Großrettbach are known to pant about anything and everything (i.e. talking to each other about various things behind closed doors ) is pure speculation.
