Groden is a district of Cuxhaven and lies east of the historic Ritzebüttel .

geography

Ritzebüttel rulership 1815–1937

The North Sea forms a natural border in the north, where the district of the core city of Cuxhaven is also located. In addition, the districts of Süder- and Westerwisch as well as Altenwalde border to the west and Altenbruch to the south.

history

Groden emerged from the merger of several farms. At the beginning of the 13th century, the nave of the Romanesque church of St. Abundus was built from field stones. In 1324, Duke Erich I of Sachsen-Lauenburg pledged the parishes of Groden and Altenwalde to Wolderich Lappe .
For their part, the Lappes pledged the parishes to Hamburg in 1372 . Because the repayment was not due in 1374, Groden and Altenwalde came under the pledge of Hamburg.

On July 31, 1394, the pledged parishes officially became Hamburg property through a purchase agreement and thus also part of the Hamburg office of Ritzebüttel.

A school in Groden was first mentioned in 1562. In 1629 the first school building was built. In 1616 work began on damming the Groden outer dyke. On June 26, 1756, large parts of Groden were destroyed by a tornado. The massive square church tower dates from 1785, the choir and the elevation of the nave made of bricks from 1868. A new building for the Groden school was built in 1911.

Incorporations

The communities Arensch , Berensch , Cuxhaven , Döse , Duhnen , Groden, Gudendorf , Holte , Insel Neuwerk , Oxstedt , Ritzebüttel , Sahlenburg , Spangen , Stickenbüttel , Süder- and Westerwisch belonged to the Hamburg office of Ritzebüttel until 1864 and then to the Ritzebüttel estate . In 1926 the municipalities of Arensch, Berensch, Duhnen, Groden, Gudendorf, Holte, Insel Neuwerk, Oxstedt, Sahlenburg, Spangen, Stickenbüttel, Süder- and Westerwisch became part of the Hamburg rulership.

When the law on the incorporation of the rural communities of Groden, Westerwisch, Süderwisch, Stickenbüttel, Duhnen and Neuwerk with Scharhörn came into force on February 6, 1935, these were assigned to the area of the city of Cuxhaven with effect from March 1, 1935, which in turn was assigned to the city of Cuxhaven on April 1, 1937 passed with the Greater Hamburg Law from Hamburg to the Stade administrative district of the Prussian province of Hanover .
