Gunslinger Girl ( Japanese ガ ン ス リ ン ガ ー ・ ガ ー ル , gansuringā gāru ) is a manga series by the Japanese artist Yū Aida . The His -Manga tells the tale of a group of young girls in cyborgs are converted and trained as killers inside. The location of this manga is Italy .

action

The organization “State Society for Social Welfare” takes care of underage girls who are terminally ill or physically disabled for various reasons under the pretext of providing them with a home and appropriate care. In fact, the society is a secret government organization primarily used to fight terrorism because a group called "Republicans" is trying to overthrow the government. The situation is similar to the Northern Ireland conflict.

The girls are transformed into cyborgs with implants, and at the same time they are “conditioned” with medication so that the body can deal with the foreign tissue. A side effect of this conditioning is the erosion of memory. In addition, they are influenced by their supervisor as a reference person. The girls transformed in this way are trained to be contract killers by their supervisors . Each girl is assigned a supervisor who gives her a name, trains her and is responsible for completing the tasks. Since this is a kind of "big brother", such a couple is also called a "Fratello couple". The girls are absolutely loyal to their carers and are trained to protect their lives. However, it can happen that they overreact to an alleged danger.

Thanks to their implants, the cyborgs are practically indestructible and have enormous power. Injuries and damage can be repaired quickly, and the girls feel little pain. The only weak point are their eyes, as projectiles can hit the brain directly through them.

Terms

Fratello

The Italian word Fratello (in German brother ) describes the relationship between a cyborg and his tutor in this story . It is not that they are really siblings, but they do have a fraternal relationship that one takes care of the other. An example of this is Henrietta, who counts the people she killed for José.

Conditioning

Conditioning is a medicinal and psychotherapeutic procedure that is used to acclimate the body with the implants and prostheses. In addition, the girl is imprinted on the carer assigned to her - this process is neither transferable nor reversible. A partially desirable side effect of the necessary medication is the almost complete erasure of the episodic memory , as a result of which the girl no longer has any memory of her previous life. In order to maintain the conditioning, the regular intake of further medication is necessary. The higher the dose, the shorter the life expectancy, which is already reduced by the conditioning.

Characters

Cyborgs

Henrietta ( ヘ ン リ エ ッ タ , Henrietta )
The young girl is the only survivor of an attack that killed her entire family. The girl, who was mutilated by the attack, was also raped several times. Transformed into a cyborg, Henrietta is still at the beginning of her killer career, which is why she sometimes makes mistakes. Henrietta is relatively good-natured and also easily bumbling. As a hobby she likes to play the violin, which Rico is jealous of.
Henrietta's preferred weapons are the SIG P239 , the Fabrique Nationale P90 SMG , the Walther WA 2000 (in the anime), and the FN FAL (in the manga).
Rico ( リ コ , Riko )
The young girl has been with the group since her eleventh birthday. Due to a congenital disability, she could not move her arms and legs, which is why she has only been in the hospital since she was born. After their parents gave up custody, Rico joined the organization. She always does her job very well and conscientiously, but is treated badly by her supervisor.
Rico's preferred weapons are the ČZ 75 , the Dragunow SWD , the Beretta SCP 70/90 ( Beretta AR70 ) (Episode 7), the Galil MAR (Micro Galil) (Episode 3 and Volume 1), the Benelli M4 Super 90 and the Rheinmetall MG3 (Vol. 3-4).
Triela ( ト リ エ ラ , Toriera )
Triela is the oldest and most experienced girl in the group. Not much is known about her past fate, but it looks like she was once kidnapped by traffickers . Triela is already in her teenage years and therefore difficult. So she doesn't always submit to her supervisor and dares to contradict. She has no specific hobbies, but collects the teddy bears that her supervisor gives her. Her defeat in the fight with the professional killer " Pinocchio " plunges her into a crisis of meaning that she overcomes through even harder training and the subsequent victory against Pinocchio. She is more self-critical and convinced that she is doing a lot wrong.
Triela's preferred weapons are the SIG P230 SL , SIG P232 SL , the Winchester Model 1897 Trench Gun with Bayonet in (Volume 1-2), the H&K G3A3 (in the anime episodes 3 and 12) and the H&K P7M8 . In the manga she also uses the H&K UMP and an H&K MP7 PDW .
Claes ( ク ラ エ ス , Kuraesu )
Claes is very calm and spends her time listening to music and reading when she is not out for the organization. She is probably the most inconspicuous of the girls, but makes her big appearance in a later episode. The death of her supervisor in a car accident made parts of her conditioning unusable, which is why she is practically never used for combat missions. Their function for society is therefore to test prostheses. She considers herself responsible for the other girls and takes care of them. She also creates a vegetable garden as a hobby.
Claes preferred weapons were the H&K VP70M and the MP5K PDW. On the mission in episode 7, she wore a Taurus Millennium Pro PT138 .
Angelica ( ア ン ジ ェ リ カ , Anjerika )
Angelica is a particularly tragic case. The disadvantages of conditioning are shown particularly clearly here. She was the very first cyborg and has already gained some experience. However, conditioning was still in its infancy at the time. She was run over by her own father because he was in debt and had a high life insurance policy on her. Without the organization she would have had no chance of survival.
Angelica's preferred weapon is the Steyr AUG A1 , the Beretta 84 (in the manga), the Steyr TMP , the M-A1 and the Steyr AUG HBAR .
Her supervisor Marco had taken care of her until the first problems arose and he withdrew more and more. Due to the at that time still untested conditioning by the medication, your memory keeps falling, which increasingly leads to problems. Later she is almost exclusively in the hospital, where she apparently dies peacefully while her supervisor Marco stays at her side. She reappears in the second season of Il Teatrino at the end of episode 2 and plays a central role in episode 4. Here it becomes clear that the drugs that helped her recovery had a not inconsiderable influence on her.
Elsa de Sica ( エ ル ザ ・ デ ・ シ ー カ , Eruza de Shīka )
The young girl is very separated and has no contact with the others. She just longs for the love and affection of her caregiver. That's why she always tries very hard during the missions to get some attention from him. However, he always treats her extremely coolly and in no way cares about her feelings. Desperate to receive no reply, she finally kills her supervisor and then herself. This act shakes the entire department and is recorded in the investigation report as an act by the Republicans for political reasons.
Elsa's preferred weapons are the SIG 550 , SIG 551 , SIG Sauer P229, and PGM Mini-Hecate .338 .
Petrushka ( ペ ト ル ー シ ュ カ , Petorūshuka )
The girl is the first cyborg of the second series. As such, she has various improvements that make her more flexible than the other cyborgs. At the same time, their life expectancy should be higher than that of the other cyborgs. Petrushka used to be called Elizabeta Baranovskaya and was a ballet student at the Bolshoi Theater. However, due to a cancerous tumor on her leg, she had to stop dancing ballet. She was sent to Italy for surgery, but after her leg was amputated, she attempted suicide and jumped from the roof of the hospital. In contrast to the other girls, Petrushka is significantly older at 16 years of age. It appears in both the manga and the second season of the anime.
Petrushka's preferred weapons are the Specter M4 SMG and Taurus PT92 .

Fratelli

José Croce ( ジ ョ ゼ , Joze )
José Croce, also known as Giuseppe, is Henrietta's supervisor. He is always very good to the girl and treats her like his little sister. He not only teaches her how to kill, but tries to teach her other things as well, including showing her the stars. He also keeps giving her gifts such as a coat or a camera. When he is supposed to punish her for a failed assignment, he resists. Because of his good nature, however, his department also regards him as a security risk. José sometimes wonders if what he's doing is right. Jose is also Jean's little brother. Both are the only survivors in an attack on the family
Jose uses a Fabrique Nationale Five-seveN and an Ingram MAC-10 (in the anime) as weapons .
Jean ( ジ ャ ン , Jan )
Jean is Rico's supervisor. In contrast to his brother, he is rather tough with the girl. No matter what Rico does, he always finds something to criticize. He also never gives her presents. Where his brother is almost too soft, Jean is too strict.
Hilshire ( ヒ ル シ ャ ー , Hirushā )
The German was once a Europol official but was fired after helping a mafia boss escape. Together with a coroner, he freed Triela from the hands of the traffickers, swearing that he would at least save this girl. Maybe that's why he's Triela's supervisor and always good to the girl. He is unsure how close the relationship between him and Triela should be and is very worried about her.
Raballo ( ラ バ ロ , Rabaro )
Ravaro was Claes' supervisor. He was once a captain in the military police, but retired after an accident there. He tries to teach Claes a lot and among other things goes fishing with her. However, over time, he got scruples about training the girl to be a killer. He is eventually run over by a car. From the context, however, it is unclear whether it was an accidental or an arranged accident.
Marco ( マ ル コ ー , Marukō )
Marco is Angelica's supervisor. He used to work for a special government unit but was fired because of his poor eyesight. At first he cares a lot about Angelica and even invents a fairy tale for her, which his girlfriend later publishes as a book. But when he notices that Angelica forgets everything over time, he becomes more and more frustrated and only does the bare essentials for her.
Marco's preferred weapon is a Steyr M-GB .
Raulo ( ラ ウ ー ロ , Raūro )
Raulo is Elsa's supervisor. He always treats the girl very negatively and makes a very strict distinction between work and privacy. Disappointed about the lack of affection, he is finally killed by Elsa.
Alessandro ( ア レ ッ サ ン ド ロ , Aressandoro )
Alessandro is Petrushka's Fratello . He is new to the State Society for Social Welfare . Alessandro used to work as a spy and secret agent. At first Petrushka is just a weapon for him, but later he starts a love affair with her. Like Petrushka, he appears in the manga and in the second season in the anime.
