Karl Gustav Moritz von Kessel (born March 27, 1797 in Groß Neudorf , † January 16, 1857 in Erfurt ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Gustav was the son of Karl Moritz von Kessel (1748–1822), the elder of the Brieg district, and his second wife, Charlotte, née von Wallenrodt (1776–1847).

Military career

Coming from the cadet corps, Kessel was transferred to the Prussian Army as a porter ensign in the 4th Company of the Guard Regiment . Awarded the Iron Cross II. Class for his behavior in the Battle of Großgörschen , he was promoted to Second Lieutenant in mid-May 1813 and took part in the battles near Bautzen and Paris in the course of the Wars of Liberation .

After the war, Kessel rose to become captain and company commander until mid-April 1828 . Promoted to major on March 30, 1839, he became second in command of the 1st Battalion in the 3rd Guards Landwehr Regiment in Görlitz . This was followed on March 26, 1841 by his return to the 1st Guards Regiment on foot and Kessel commanded the fusilier battalion until January 1, 1849. He was then appointed commander of the 29th Infantry Regiment and promoted to lieutenant colonel on May 8, 1849 . His regiment chief Grand Duke Leopold von Baden awarded him the Commander's Cross of the Order of Zähringer Lions the following year . On January 18, 1851, Kessel was promoted to colonel and at the end of April 1852, on the instructions of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV., Attended the funeral of the Grand Duke in Karlsruhe . On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Battle of Großgörschen, Kessel received the Knight's Cross of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern on May 2, 1853 . On May 23, 1854 he was transferred to Erfurt as commander of the 15th Infantry Brigade, and in this position Kessel advanced to major general on July 13, 1854. After he took his leave with the statutory pension on December 18, 1856 , Kessel died a few weeks later and was buried on January 20, 1857 in the August cemetery in Erfurt.

family

Kessel had married Auguste von Bassewitz (1810-1897) on October 2, 1830 in Potsdam . She was a daughter of the President of the Province of Brandenburg Friedrich Magnus von Bassewitz (1773-1858) and his wife Adelheid, née von Gerlach (1784-1865). The marriage remained childless.
