Gustav Heinrich Freiherr von der Goltz (born September 12, 1801 in Königsberg , † December 23, 1870 in Posen ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Gustav was a son of Julius von der Goltz (1764–1837) and his wife Henriette, born von Wedelstaedt (1770–1854). His father was Professor of Law at the Albertus University in Königsberg and the Prussian Lieutenant General Wasa von der Goltz (1807–1874) was his younger brother.

Military career

Goltz joined the 1st Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army on August 10, 1817 and was promoted to second lieutenant by the end of November 1819 . For his help and his prudent behavior during the floods in East Prussia in early 1832 , he was awarded the Red Eagle Order IV class in mid-February 1832 . By the end of November 1841 Goltz rose to become captain and company commander . With the promotion to major on August 24, 1848, he became commander of the 1st battalion in the 18th Landwehr Regiment and took part in the campaign against Denmark the following year . On September 10, 1850, Goltz was transferred to the 5th Infantry Regiment as battalion commander. After being promoted to lieutenant colonel , he was appointed commander of the 22nd Infantry Regiment in Neisse on June 15, 1857 . Goltz was promoted to colonel in mid-October 1857 and was appointed commander of the 28th Infantry Brigade in Wesel on August 23, 1860, with the position of his regiment à la suite . In this position he rose to major general at the end of September 1860 . As lieutenant general, Goltz was commander of the 2nd division in Danzig from June 25, 1864 until he was put up for disposition on November 30, 1865, when he was awarded the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves .

During the mobilization on the occasion of the German War , Goltz was reused in 1866 as the commanding general of the Deputy General Command of the V Army Corps and in January 1867 was awarded the Grand Commander of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern . When the war against France broke out in 1870 , he resumed this position for the duration of the mobile relationship and died while exercising his service on December 23, 1870 in Posen.

Goltz married Albertine von der Goltz (1806–1864) on October 13, 1826 . The following children were born from the marriage:
