The Gutruf in downtown Vienna

The Gutruf is a Vienna city center restaurant in the first  Viennese district of Inner City , Milchgasse 1 with prominent guest list and high contemporary historical and cultural importance.

The trained operetta singer Hannes Hoffmann , who took over the bar in 1947 and ran it in the 1950s and 1960s, is considered a role model for the time - critical one - person play Der Herr Karl by Carl Merz and Helmut Qualtinger .

history

The founding years

Leopoldine Gutruf (born 1877), an impoverished factory owner, opened the “English House L. Gutruf & Co” restaurant together with her partner Emil Warchalowski in 1906. The business specialized in import delicacies and drinks. In 1947 the founder sold the restaurant to Hannes Hoffmann. Leopoldine Gutruf died in 1963 at the age of 86.

The Hannes Hoffmann era

Hannes Hoffmann ran the restaurant from 1947 to 1966.

The central figure of Gutruf in the 1950s was “Quasi”, alias Helmut Qualtinger. A corona of friends, admirers and observers was grouped around him. Artists such as the sculptors Fritz Wotruba and Alfred Hrdlicka , the painters Friedensreich Hundertwasser , Josef Mikl and Markus Prachensky , the poets HC Artmann and Reinhard Priessnitz , the caricaturist Erich Sokol , the composer Gottfried von Eine , the actor Kurt Sowinetz , the cabaret artist Werner Schneyder , the then police chief Josef "Joschi" Holaubek and the politician Helmut Zilk were documented as guests of this "golden era" of the restaurant. The Viennese original Otto Kobalek played a special role .

In a radio interview with Georg Biron , which Hoffmann conducted in 1987, Hoffmann talked about the back room, the meeting with Qualtinger and the making of "Mr. Karl". Hoffmann decreed that this interview could only be broadcast after his death (he died in 1988). In fact, it first aired in 1989.

The television journalist and temporary general manager of ORF Thaddäus Podgorski began to frequent the restaurant during this time. Documented regular guests during this time were the actors Heinz Marecek , Otto Schenk and Helmut Lohner , the writer Heinz Rudolf Unger and journalists such as Helmut A. Gansterer , Herbert Völker and Roman Schliesser .

Fatty George , who had been running the jazz bar Fatty's Saloon in the immediate vicinity on Petersplatz since 1958 , was also often a guest at Gutruf.

In 1966 the restaurant burned down and Hannes Hoffmann sold it. The restaurant was run by various tenants from 1967.

The years of Rudolf Wein

Rudolf (Rudi) Wein ran the Gutruf from 1972 to 1991. The businessman and agent of the Hungarian and GDR secret services first came into the Gutruf in 1962 as a friend of Udo Proksch . After the takeover in 1972, Wein renovated the restaurant and introduced the still existing cookshop. He founded the Gutruf Club to ward off uninvited guests. Rudi Wein only admitted a few women, Erni Mangold , Eva Deissen and Louise Martini have been handed down . In principle, wives were not allowed in. Dogs were also strictly prohibited under wine.

During this time, the racing driver and entrepreneur Niki Lauda , the musician Fatty George and politicians such as Karl Blecha and Norbert Steger were among the other regular guests. In August 1974 Bernhard Chung started working as a cook at Gutruf. In 1983 he received Austrian citizenship. Also in 1983 Wein gave 90% of its shares to Chung. Rudi Wein finally left in 1991.

The Gutruf from 1991 until today

Bernhard Chung has been running the Gutruf since 1991. When he was taken over, the “ban on women” was finally lifted. In 1992 Thaddäus Podgorski, Herbert Völker and Peter E Allmayer-Beck acquired the location. The documented female visitors to the “men's bar” include the painters Maria Lahr , Martina Schettina and Eva Jansenberger , the actresses Mijou Kovacs and Brigitte Neumeister , the writer Elfriede Gerstl , the athlete and journalist Ingrid Wendl and the journalist Marga Swoboda . Gerhard Bronner , who preferred the Marietta bar (in which he founded the Cabaret Fledermaus in 1967 ) during the Qualtinger period , was later a regular guest and, together with “The Voice” Ernst Grissemann, participated in the weekly panel discussion.

The Gutruf book

In 2006, an anniversary volume “Das Gutruf - Ein Hinterzimmer wird 100” was published for the first time. Since some of the regular guests were photographers, including Franz Hubmann , Gino Molin-Pradel and Kristian Bissuti , the book could be enriched with photos from all Gutruf eras. The painters Franz Ringel , Adolf Frohner , Maria Lahr and Walter Schmögner were regular guests in the back room and immortalized their memories in Gutruf-related works. The editors of both books were the Insider and - since 1992 - the owners of the restaurant Thaddäus Podgorski , Herbert Völker and Peter E Allmayer-Beck .

useful information

From May to September 1781, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived in the house that is now at 1 Milchgasse. Here he composed the opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail , which is indicated by a plaque.

From 2003 to 2004 the exhibition Quasi a Genius - Helmut Qualtinger (1928–1986) ran at the Wien Museum . A Gutruf corner with original furniture and wall papering as well as the typical wall decorations was shown.
