Johann Christoph Friedrich GutsMuths, namesake of the school

The GutsMuths-Gymnasium in Quedlinburg is a high school sponsored by the Harz district . It includes the school buildings in the convent and in the southern city.

Surname

The school is named after the pedagogue and sports teacher Johann Christoph Friedrich GutsMuths , a son of the city of Quedlinburg.

history

In 1903 the school building in Convent 26a was inaugurated as GutsMuths-Oberrealschule after the foundation stone had been laid in 1902. A previous secondary school existed at the site of today's Carl Ritter educational center . In 1904 it was named GutsMuths Realschule. The initially ten-class school was expanded to become a twelve-class upper secondary school for boys; it was only open to girls from 1918. In 1926 the director Hermann Lorenz retired due to age . The first extension was made in 1929. The school was named GutsMuths School in 1932 . Urban reform secondary school with upper secondary school . During the National Socialist era , girls were excluded from classes and only allowed back in 1946.

From 1960, the new school terms in which it is in accordance with GDR school for Extended Secondary School Quedlinburg renamed.

Since the school year 1991/92 it has been run as GutsMuths-Gymnasium, and since then it has been led to higher education entrance qualifications from the fifth grade onwards . There were deviations at the end of the 1990s due to the introduction of the 13th grade and the associated support level, where the fifth and sixth grades were still taught together in the secondary schools. However, this was withdrawn after seven years, so that the Abitur was only taken after 13 years from 2002 to 2006.

Merging of the high schools

As a result of the falling number of students, two Quedlinburg high schools were unsustainable. Because of the long ways to school, the Erxleben-Gymnasium was not sustainable on its own, so that the GutsMuths-Gymnasium was favored as the main location by the sponsor and the Gymnasium in Süderstadt should be abandoned. This sparked protests, especially from the parents of the southern city, who did not want to send their students into the city center. Also at the initiative of the student council of GutsMuths-Gymnasium, there were considerations to merge with GutsMuths-Gymnasium instead of closing the Erxleben-Gymnasium. After inspections by the school authorities and newly discovered structural defects in the building in Weyhestrasse (House II), preparations for the merger of the two grammar schools began. The completely redesigned sports grounds in Weyhestrasse, the construction defects in the school building against the renovations carried out in August-Bebel-Strasse and the considerable need for renovation of the school grounds and sports complex there had to be weighed up. The merger was completed at the beginning of the 2004/05 school year. The secondary level 1 students are taught in the building in August-Bebel-Ring, the secondary level 2 students in the historic building in the convent. With the decision of the district council of December 8th, 2004 the name GutsMuths-Gymnasium was determined. In 2006 the sports facilities in the southern part of the city were completely renovated for € 371,000. The different characteristics of the two grammar schools (on the one hand natural science, sport and history, on the other hand multimedia) make the merger difficult, since the relationship between the two schools was not considered pleasant before the merger. For this reason the former headmaster of GutsMuths-Gymnasium, Mr. Raymund Witte, renounced his function as headmaster with a possible deputy, Mr. Joachim Friedrich. Therefore, the school management of the Erxleben-Gymnasium also became the management of the merged GutsMuths-Gymnasium.

building

“As a reminder - Abitur class 2003”, a gift from the former students. To be seen at the rear main entrance in the convent. The text can only be read from the inside.

Convention 26a

The listed building in the new town is a neo -construction with floral Art Nouveau elements and an outline of stone elements . It consists of the old building (along the chaplaincy, built in 1902/03 according to plans by the City Building Councilor Paul Laumer ) and the new building (extension in the convent towards Steinweg). The historical substance of the two-story building has been preserved. The basement was made usable with sanitary facilities, a lounge (today partly used as an internet café) and classrooms. The art cabinet is located in the attic studio.

A special feature are the (usually) GutsMuths-specific tips that have been preserved as gifts from former high school graduates. These include the iron lettering "GutsMuths-Gymnasium" above the entrance to the school premises in the convent, "the stone of remembrance" in front of the rear main entrance, the GutsMuths reminder window (Abitur year 2003) or the "tree of life" next to the gym in the convent . These gifts were financed by the high school graduates and partly by the friends' association and were usually kept secret until the last day of school.

The building is surrounded by a green area. The enclosure consists of pillars with a top made of sandstone and hedges arranged in between (the hedges were completely removed in the 2010s). The complex is registered as a school in the Quedlinburg monument register.

Weyhestrasse 1 (1991-2004)

The prefabricated building is located directly on Kleerswiese and the residential area of the same name and was run as the Hans Beimler Polytechnic School in GDR times . After the fall of the Wall, this was assigned as House 2 to the newly formed GutsMuths Gymnasium. In addition to the spacious school yard, a small park with a pond belongs to the rear after renaturation and renovation. The sports field was extensively renovated in the mid-1990s with a tartan base and an inner cage. The building will be used by the JPC Mette vocational school after being abandoned by the merged high school.

August-Bebel-Ring 19 (from 2004)

The prefabricated building typical of that time was inaugurated as the Bernhard Koenen Oberschule ( POS ) after its construction in the 1975/76 school year . This building was used by the Süderstadt-Gymnasium (later Dorothea-Christiane Erxleben-Gymnasium) from 1991. As early as 2000, the building was converted to make it accessible and an external elevator was installed. With the amalgamation of the Quedlinburg grammar schools, this was continued as Haus Erxleben . Extensive renovations of the building, the gymnasium, the school premises and the sports field were and are necessary in order to be able to keep the school running in the building.

societies

Support association

The "Friends of GutsMuths-Gymnasium Quedlinburg eV" supports school life with financial aid for projects at GutsMuths-Gymnasium. The school festivals and new acquisitions are co-financed by member donations.

LC Literaria

The "LC LITERARIA e.V." Verein der Freunde des GutsMuths-Gymnasium Quedlinburg is a club of former students and teachers of the school and was founded in 1908.

Benefactor

A foundation was set up by one person for the GutsMuths-Gymnasium, the distributions are made entirely for the interests of the Gymnasium. The donor is a former student of the school, but he would like to remain unknown, so that the distribution amount is transferred anonymously every year.

Efforts of the school management of the Erxleben-Gymnasium in the context of the merger to maintain the headquarters and the name of the Gymnasium located in the southern part of the city as part of the merger failed because of the resistance in the population and the tradition of the GutsMuths-Schule. Another reason would have been the loss of the foundation contribution, as it can only legally be paid out to the GutsMuths School (name link).

Educational concept

  • There are partnerships on a scientific level with the local Julius Kühn Institute (or with the former Federal Institute for Breeding Research on Cultivated Plants ). Here, schoolchildren can carry out experiments, for example for participation in Jugend forscht . The data infrastructure has also been improved: as part of a cooperation, students at the school programmed parts of the intranet management software that was previously used.
  • The former Dorothea-Christiane-Erxleben-Gymnasium has been run as an all-day school since 1998. The merged school has been run as an all-day school since the 2003/04 school year. To implement this, leisure time offers, courses and working groups are offered in the afternoon. Cooperation with municipal facilities as well as institutions and companies round off this. A total of up to 250 full-day places are possible; for the 2007/08 school year, the 5th to 7th grades were included in the all-day school area.
  • The school strives for external awards, including the title All-Day School for some of the lower levels, School without Racism - School with Courage (since September 3, 2004 under the sponsorship of Abini and Dirk Zöllner ) and Healthy School - Finding Balance ( since January 2009).
