Gwen Ifill
Gwendolyn L. "Gwen" Ifill (born September 29, 1955 in New York City , New York - † November 14, 2016 in Washington, DC ) was an American journalist , television presenter and author .
Life
Ifill was born the fifth child of Eleanor and Oliver Urdill Ifill in Jamaica , a borough of Queens . Her father was a preacher in the African Methodist Episcopal Church , who - the family originally came from Barbados - immigrated to the United States from Panama . The mother was also from Barbados. Due to his father's work, Ifill grew up in different states. She lived u. a. in Pennsylvania , Massachusetts and New York.
Ifill attended Simmons College in Boston and graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications .
Ifill died at the age of 61 in a Washington hospice of complications from endometrial cancer .
Professional background
Ifill first worked as a journalist for the Boston Herald , Baltimore Evening Sun , Washington Post and New York Times newspapers . At the New York Times she was temporarily responsible for the reporting of the White House and in 1992 accompanied the presidential candidacy of Bill Clinton . Through the mediation of Tim Russert , her television career began in 1999 as a reporter for NBC , where she was responsible for the congress . From 1999 until her death she worked for the non-commercial TV station PBS . There she was first presenter and editor-in-chief of the weekly political television magazine Washington Week . She later co-hosted and co-edited the main daily news show, PBS NewsHour , with Judy Woodruff . She moderated the vice presidential debates in 2004 and 2008, as well as one of the numerous presidential debates by Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders in 2015 .
Awards
Ifill was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2006.
