HIM ( acronym for: His Infernal Majesty ) was a Finnish music group from Helsinki , which was attributed to dark rock . The group itself called their music, however, as "Love Metal".
history
Beginnings (1991–1995)
As teenagers, Mikko “Migé Amour” Paananen and Ville Valo founded a band in 1991 under the name Kafferi (inspired by HP Lovecraft ). But in the same year they changed the band name to His Infernal Majesty ( His Devilish Majesty ). Valo played the guitar parts on his bass and Paananen the bass parts. Juippi and later Juha Tarvonen played alternately on the drums.
A demo with the song Xilqa Xilqa Besa Besa was recorded under the name Kafferi in 1991 , the basis for the later demo Borellus from 1994. The title Xilqa Xilqa Besa Besa comes from the incantation of the same name against evil spirits, which is in the Necronomicon , a fictional book, featured in several HP Lovecraft stories.
As His Infernal Majesty, they played a demo in 1992 under the title Witches and other Night Fears ( witches and other night fears a). The title comes from an essay by Charles Lamb from 1821, which in turn was used as an epigraph for the short story The Dunwich Horror (German title: Das Grauen von Dunwich ) by HP Lovecraft. The demo was never released, is owned by Ville Valo and supposedly contains 7 unknown songs.
His Infernal Majesty made their first appearance on New Year's Eve 1992 at the Semifinal Club in Helsinki . After this performance Paananen had to do his two years of military service at the age of 18 and so there was an involuntary break from the band.
After the guitarist Lindström graduated from school in 1994, he decided to reactivate the band with Valo and they took the same band name again: His Infernal Majesty. As a duo they played a demo in 1994 with the songs Serpent Ride , Borellus and The Heartless . Lindström played bass, guitar and Valo drums and sang. Originally, Valo was planned as the band's bass player, which is why they were looking for a singer, but no one was found. When Paananen returned from military service in 1995, he was impressed by the demo and joined the formation as bassist. In the absence of a singer, the trio decided that one of them would have to do this part. In 1995 they recorded a demo where Valo was still playing the drums and singing Paananen (possibly Lindström as well) to find out who the best singer was. Lindström and Paananen finally persuaded Valo to take over the part of the singer, although he hesitantly agreed. Valo also showed himself to be responsible as a songwriter, simply because the others lacked the motivation to do so. He described the fact that Valo became a singer and songwriter as a necessity, as the desire for an intact band determined this decision.
“You know, it was more because of a need. Because we wanted to have a band, but nobody was writing any music, so I had to do it. Same with singing for this band. We couldn't find a singer, but we could find a bass player, originally I was supposed to be the bass player, trying to find singers, but there was none. [...]. "
An untitled second demo followed in 1994, and the third demo His Infernal Majesty in 1995 . During a performance by the band Slumgudgeon in the Tavastia Club, they became aware of their drummer Pätkä (Juhana Tuomas Rantala, * 1974), whom they were able to convince to join their band.
First EP: 666 Ways to Love: Prologue (1996)
In 1995 they sent their demo (entitled: His Infernal Majesty ) to various record labels. Anto Melasniemi, a friend of Valo's, played the keyboard on this demo. At the beginning of 1997 he joined the group as a permanent member. The demo included the songs Stigmata Diaboli , Wicked Game and The Phantom Gate . With that they got a record deal for an EP .
In late summer 1996, the EP 666 Ways to Love: Prologue was recorded in Finnvox Studios in Helsinki and released on October 19, 1996 in Finland. The second guitar was played by “Oki” from the band Charged, which was a one-off guest appearance. The EP contained four songs, Stigmata Diaboli , Wicked Game , Dark Secret Love and The Heartless , it was produced by Hiili Hiilesmaa . The cover of the EP shows a black and white photo of Valo's mother Anita, aged 19. Although the band name is still shown on the cover as His Infernal Majesty , the CD back and the CD itself shows the abbreviation HIM for the first time . This EP was published in an edition of 1000 copies.
From then on, the group considered a simple HIM for later publications , until they finally decided on the more handy short form HIM . Valo justified this with the fact that the original name was "easy to forget". The Canadian thrash metal band Infernäl Mäjesty , however, was unknown to HIM.
Debut album Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 (1998–1999)
In 1998 the single Wicked Game and the accompanying debut album Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 were released in Germany. The debut was sold over 120,000 times. In 1998 keyboardist Antto Melasniemi was replaced by Jussi-Miko "Zoltan Pluto" Salminen and in 1999 drummer Rantala left in favor of Mika Kristian "Gas Lipstick" Karppinen.
Breakthrough with Razorblade Romance (2000)
The ballad Join Me (in Death) (also the title song of the movie The 13th Floor - Are you what you think? ) Stayed at number 1 in the single charts in Germany for weeks and was awarded gold. The accompanying album Razorblade Romance entered the German charts at number 1, sold over 750,000 copies and was awarded three gold and one platinum records. In addition, two other songs ( Gone with the Sin and Right Here in My Arms ) made it into the top 20. Various awards (including the “Spectator Comets” awarded by VIVA and VIVA Zwei ) and a brisk tour activity followed. For this, the musicians were awarded the VIVA-Comet as “Best Band” in 2001. From the Underground - rock band they developed with the release of their worldwide success Razorblade Romance (2000) v in a short time to international stars and idols. a. young women, not least because of the person of the singer Ville Valo. At the end of 2000, Emerson Burton, the original keyboardist, replaced Salminens as a permanent member of the band.
Further successes with Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights and Love Metal (2001-2004)
In 2000, HIM toured a lot. The following work, Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights (2001), was consequently created “on the move”. The first single Pretending reached the top 10 and once again helped the album to great popularity: Deep Shadows & Brilliant Highlights reached number 2 in the German charts, received a gold award and was ultimately sold over 250,000 times. In addition, the next song called In Joy and Sorrow could also make it into the top 20.
The band decided in early 2002 to take a year off from work. At least the stage presence should be reduced a little, not least to gain more time for the creative processes. To bridge the release break, the previous singles were released in a box set.
In 2003 the album Love Metal was presented to the public. With thematic continuity in the lyrics, which continue to deal with death and past loves, HIM returned to their musically "harder" roots with the album Love Metal . The album reached number 1 on the German charts. The first single, The Funeral of Hearts , reached number 3 in the German single charts. The Sacrament and Buried Alive by Love both made the top 30.
The greatest hits album And Love Said No compressed the band's career to date on one CD in 2004 with 14 well-known and two new tracks.
Separation of GUN, Dark Light and Venus Doom (2005-2009)
In early 2005, the band switched to Warner Music . She split from her old GUN / Supersonic label after the five-album contract with And Love Said No was fulfilled.
In April 2005 Love Metal Archives Vol. 1 appeared ; a DVD with almost all music videos that HIM have produced since the beginning of their career. There are also various live recordings on the disc. On an additional DVD of the limited version, the film HIM vs. BAM included. Are still included making-of video for The Sacrament , Buried Alive by Love , Solitary Man and And Love Said No .
In September 2005, HIM released their fifth studio album, Dark Light , the first album to be recorded and produced entirely in the USA. This album was also released for the first time outside of Europe, in the USA, Canada and Japan. For this album they got marketing support from Bam Margera and Jimmy Pop (front man of the band Bloodhound Gang ). Together they wanted to help the Finns achieve chart success in the USA. The band reached number 18 on the US mainstream rock charts with Dark Light .
In the fall of 2006, HIM canceled their American tour in order to work on a new album instead. On September 14, 2007, the band's sixth studio album, Venus Doom , was finally released. After the successful, but musically controversial previous album, the band wanted to find their way back to their rock roots and take a much harder and more uncompromising pace.
On April 29, 2008 the live DVD and Live CD Digital Versatile Doom - Live at Orpheum Theater was released. This is a recording of the concerts on November 14th and 15th, 2007 in Los Angeles.
Screamworks: Love In Theory And Practice, Warner's separation and waning success (2010-2016)
HIM released their seventh studio album called Screamworks: Love In Theory And Practice on February 12, 2010 in Germany. The first single Heartkiller was released in Germany on February 5th and already reached number 5 in the charts in Finland. The second single Scared to Death was released on May 7th, the video had already been released before.
On December 7, 2010 the album SWRMXS - The Official Screamworks Remix Album was released, on which the songs of the original can be found in remixed versions by Tiesto, Morgan Page and Gavin Russom, among others.
After HIM parted ways with their label Sire / Warner on March 28, 2011, the band fell silent. Frontman Ville Valo only broke the silence with an interview with the English rock magazine Kerrang on February 15, 2012 and explained that the band was currently working on a new album, but that the creative process was being hampered by a rare illness in drummer Gas' poor. On August 16, 2012, producer Tim Palmer announced via Twitter that he would be working with HIM in London in November to complete the new album Tears on Tape . Before that, the band will release the single Strange World , a cover by the artist Ké, in September 2012 and the compilation XX - Two Decades of Love Metal in October . The album was released on November 6, 2012. The eighth studio album was released on April 26 and 29, 2013 and is called Tears on Tape . The song of the same name was released as a single in Germany on April 12, 2013.
On January 27, 2015 it was announced that the drummer Mika Kristian Karppinen will leave the band after 16 years. He proclaimed “It's time for me to move on as a musician”. He was replaced by Jukka Kröger, who made his debut in a surprise appearance by the band on July 25th of the same year.
Dissolution (2017)
On March 5, 2017, the band announced that they would split up after a final tour in late 2017. The last concert took place on December 31, 2017 at Tavastia in Helsinki.
Band name
HIM is an acronym or acronym for the long form His Infernal Majesty . The spelling of the acronym is now done without dots: HIM . The acronym is pronounced like a phonetic word and is similar to the English word him .
Emergence
They came up with the band name His Infernal Majesty through a combination of these incidents / inspirations:
- They were listening to Black Sabbath music and wanted a cool name too
- They listened to the song Oblivious to evil by Deicide on in which of Infernal Majesty is talk
- They found the name in the Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey
- HIM ( His Imperial Majesty ) is an abbreviation for one of Haile Selassie's official titles . As a teenager, Ville Valo hung out with hippies and reggae folks who believed in Haile Selassie as the messiah. Valo said he tried to believe in him at the time, but he couldn't do anything with this religion either.
The Canadian thrash metal band Infernäl Mäjesty played no role, according to Valo, HIM didn't know anything about them.
There were also alternative band names they had come up with ( Black Earth , Black Salem ), but Mige convinced the others of His Infernal Majesty .
Naming problems
In Finland: change of name to HIM
Because the name His Infernal Majesty is a clear reference to Satan, the band was suspected of Satanism by some people in Finland in the 1990s. So it happened that in 1997 at a festival a group of very religious people protested at the HIM performance by standing in the audience praying and holding up their Bibles. Then there was a brawl with the rest of the audience and the concert was canceled.
On the other hand, there were also problems with Satanists. Some Helsinki-based Satanists were not thrilled that HIM was associated with Satanism, even though they didn't understand it. There was even a conversation between Valo and one of the representatives of the Satanists. Since Ville Valo made it clear that they do not want anything to do with Satanism, the Satanists wanted to publish a pamphlet in which it says that HIM are conveying the wrong message from their point of view.
Also, the Finnish fans of His Infernal Majesty had a problem remembering this complicated name and getting it right, so they called the band HIM.
All this led to the fact that the band then officially changed their name from His Infernal Majesty to HIM.
In the USA: Name changed to HER
When HIM wanted to release their second album Razorblade Romance in the USA, they found that they weren't allowed to. There was already a band from Chicago there called HiM and their name was legally protected. This band played saxophone music and experimental jazz.
Jimmy Pop , singer of the Bloodhound Gang , wondered why he couldn't find the album in America either in stores or on the Internet. The Bloodhound Gang and HIM both had their big hits at the same time and therefore got to know each other at European festivals and kept in touch, even though they were decried as a chaotic band with fecal humor. For this reason, Jimmy Pop wanted to do the band a favor and decided to found a record company that would offer the album in the Boston area. In June 2000 he called Seppo Vesterinen, the manager of HIM, but only two years later, in June 2002, did a contract come about. To circumvent the naming problems, the album was released under the name HER ( His Evil Royalty ). The album was only released on October 28, 2003 through Universal Records, licensed by Jimmy Franks' record company, and was limited to 1000 copies. It was only in Newbury Comics -shops in New England ( Massachusetts sold).
The group acquired the rights to the name and has since been allowed to call itself HIM in the USA.
The third album, Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights , was only released three years after its actual release in America. The same happened to the fourth album Love Metal , it was only released two years later. Always through Universal Records, licensed by Jimmy Franks' record company, but this time under the name HIM .
Love Metal and Heartagram
Love metal
The contrast between the melancholy love texts and the mostly hard music formed the name "Love Metal", which the band also used for their fourth album, which was released in 2003. Love Metal is an album title and at the same time a self-titled music genre for the band HIM. It is not clear whether HIM had the idea for this term or whether it was given to them by fans:
1. The record company really wanted to categorize HIM in order to market it. But there were disagreements about which genre they actually belong to. That's why HIM have come up with their own genre.
2. The HIM bassist said the fans called their music like this:
“This love metal thing has been hanging around us for years. We laughed at it at first because we just couldn't get rid of it. People said: you do love metal. And when we discovered that this term had become part of what we were doing, we consequently simply used it as the album title [...]. "
Heartagram
The heartagram is the HIM band logo. The symbol consists of a heart and an inverted pentagram . Ville Valo himself says that the heart stands for love, the pentagram for the spiritual abyss. So it is supposed to symbolize good and bad. He drew the Heartagram for the first time on his 20th birthday. It came about by chance while scribbling around.
On the first album Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 there is a heart on the back of the booklet with 666 in the middle . As with the Heartagram, it is a combination of good and bad. The heartagram was first used on the back of the booklet from the second album Razorblade Romance . Since then there is a heartagram on every album. At the beginning the heartagram was not surrounded by a circle, it is only from the fourth album Love Metal that it is repeatedly seen with a circle.
The band logo has a corresponding popularity in fan circles, for example as a tattoo motif or on clothing. Celebrities like Bam Margera and Kat von D have also had the symbol tattooed.
Success title
Join Me (in Death) , commercially released as Join Me , was released in 1999 on the album Razorblade Romance and is considered the band's best-known song in Europe. Although it was a few years old at the time of release and the song itself is not one of the band's favorites, it made a name for HIM in Europe after it was played in the movie The 13th Floor . Join Me in Death is also featured on the Resident Evil: Apocalypse soundtrack.
There are two versions of the Join Me music video: one inspired by The 13th Floor and one as a vague interpretation of Romeo and Juliet . The song is interpreted by many as a song about suicide due to lines of text like "Join me in Death" and "This life ain't worth living" ("This life was not worth living") . but was written by Ville Valo as a modern version of Romeo and Juliet . He said: “I think it's one of the weaker songs on the album. The piano is nice, but probably the song doesn't mean anything to me because it's not about real life. It's an old song - the first demo was ready in January '98 - and I'm tired of it because it's just the same simple thing over and over again. "

We wanted something more simple. There was a death metal band called Deicide whose singer Glen Benton branded an inverted cross on his forehead. I was a big death metal fan and also a reggae fan. Benton had a song where he sang "infernal majesty" and then on the first pages of Anton LaVey's The Satanic Bible the term "his infernal majesty" is mentioned. But HIM is also used in the reggae circles as an acronym for His Imperial Majesty or Haile Selassie aka the Butcher of Eritrea who some people with uncombed hair consider a messiah. His Infernal Majesty was a combination of all that, and I think it still describes us very well. We like so many things that we can't do any of them well, and we try to add everything possible into the mixture musically as well as otherwise. There isn't really a story behind the name; it's just a combination of everything. Mige decided the name by painting the words His Infernal Majesty on his amp. It was his only amp and he didn't have money to buy another one, so that was that. I recommend his method to anyone who is fighting over a band's name.
