List of semiconductor packages
Semiconductor chips of diodes , transistors , thyristors , triacs , ICs as well as laser diodes and phototransistors and diodes require a housing for sealing against environmental influences, for further processing, for electrical connection and for heat dissipation.
This article mainly covers the discrete components , the housings for integrated circuits , on the other hand, are dealt with under chip housings .
Basically, a distinction is made between wired components ( through hole mounting , short THT from English. Through Hole Technology or THD from English. Through Hole Device ) and component housings for surface mounting (short SMT from English Surface Mounted Technology or SMD from English Surface Mounted Device ).
SMDs have connection legs that are not pushed through the circuit board , but soldered onto the surface.

Round metal case, connections on one side
Common until the 1980s, but rarely used since then. Common applications today include photodiodes , pyroelectric sensors , laser diodes .

Press-fit diodes and thyristors have a cylindrical, corrugated housing made of copper with a collar; they are pressed into heat sinks.

Used for large power losses, lateral holes for screw fastening, solder, plug or screw connections on top. The heat-dissipating base plate is insulated, the attachment does not also serve as an electrical connection.
