Hans Ferdinand Gerhard

Hans Ferdinand Gerhard (born March 14, 1868 in Wolfenbüttel ; † September 15, 1930 in Ratzeburg ) was a German journalist , theater critic , writer , Lauenburg regional archivist and local history researcher .

Life

In Wolfenbüttel, where Gerhard was born, many generations of his ancestors had already worked as pharmacists . He himself tended to the humanities and studied German , history and philosophy in Leipzig, Berlin, Freiburg, Geneva and Heidelberg , where he received his Dr. phil. received his doctorate .

Study trips took him to France and England .

From 1895 he worked in Hamburg as a journalist and theater critic for the daily newspaper Hamburgischer Correspondent , and was chairman of the Literary Society . His circle of acquaintances and friends included Detlev von Liliencron , Gustav Falke , Fritz Stavenhagen , Jakob Löwenberg , Otto Ernst , Richard Dehmel and Gustav Frenssen .

In 1905 he ended his journalistic activities and moved with his family to Ratzeburg to work as a freelance writer. One of his comedies is called `` Aus der Stille '' . This is also where his Hamburg novel In der Jodutenstrasse was written .

The First World War and the post-war period forced him to make himself available as a substitute teacher at the Lauenburg School of Academics .

In 1922 the Duchy of Lauenburg appointed him "Organizer of the free education system" in order to develop adult education and the library system.

In 1925, the Lauenburgische Heimat , which he initiated, appeared as a publication organ on topics relating to the Lauenburg landscape, history and culture.

In 1929 he was able to crown this activity with the opening of the local museum of the Duchy of Lauenburg district in Ratzeburg, today the district museum in the manor house at Ratzeburg Cathedral .

Gerhard died in Ratzeburg in 1930 as the Lauenburg regional archivist. On June 18, 2012, the grandchildren of the Ratzeburg writer and local history researcher handed over their grandfather's literary estate to the district archive for safekeeping and public use.
