Hans Karl Wilhelm Passow , from 1871 von Passow (born April 22, 1827 in Wredenhagen , † January 18, 1896 in Schwerin ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

Hans (von) Passow came from a middle-class family from Mecklenburg, which has produced academics and civil servants for generations. His parents were the grand ducal Mecklenburg-Schwerin Oberlandforstmeister Friedrich Ludwig Passow (1793–1872) and his wife Luise, née von Bülow (1797–1869).

Military career

He first attended grammar school in Schwerin and was then a cadet . On July 1, 1846, Passow joined the 2nd Musketeer Battalion in Mecklenburg service as a portepeefähnrich . Promoted to secondary lieutenant at the end of the year , he took part in the battles near Düppel and Nübeler Mühle during the campaign against Denmark in 1848 . As Prime Lieutenant Passow was transferred to the Jäger Battalion on October 4, 1852, and served as an adjutant at the division headquarters from March 29, 1853 to September 1, 1856 . For almost three months from June 7, 1859 he was an orderly officer at the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin . On May 31, 1860, Passow was promoted to captain and company commander in the Jäger battalion. As such, he took part in the campaign against Bavaria in 1866 .

Promoted to major with a patent dated October 1, 1867 and made a regular staff officer in Fusilier Regiment No. 90 , Passow joined the Prussian Army the following year . He came to the 2nd Guards Regiment on foot and was appointed commander of the Fusilier Battalion on April 12, 1870. He also led this battalion in the war against France in 1870/71 in the battles near Gravelotte , Beaumont , Sedan and the siege of Paris . Passow was awarded both classes of the Iron Cross on the occasion of the entry of German troops into Berlin on June 16, 1871 by Kaiser Wilhelm I in his capacity as King of Prussia "because of the bravery shown in the war against France before the enemy" raised hereditary nobility .

As a lieutenant colonel on March 16, 1875, he was initially assigned to lead infantry regiment No. 16 , and on June 19, Passow was appointed regiment commander and finally promoted to colonel in this capacity on July 3, 1875 . From June 4, 1881, as major general , he commanded the 60th Infantry Brigade, was promoted to lieutenant general on September 18, 1886 and appointed commander of the 22nd division on November 23, 1886 . In recognition of his longstanding achievements, Passow received the star for the Red Eagle Order II. Class with Oak Leaves on January 22, 1888 , the Grand Cross of the Order of the Griffin on August 25, 1888 , and the Grand Cross of the Duke of Saxony-Ernestine Order on June 1, 1889 .

On June 17, 1889 Passow was awarded the character as General of Infantry with board for disposition made.

family

Passow had married Erika Magdalene Theodore Stever (1848-1940) on April 9, 1869 in Niekrenz . The marriage had nine children, including:
