The current place was laid out in 1882 and named after the Welsh country estate Hawarden of the British Prime Minister at the time, William E. Gladstone . In 1887 Hawarden was incorporated as an independent municipality.

The place Calliope , until 1872 the administrative seat of Sioux County, was incorporated into Hawarden in 1893.
