Heinrich Karl Scholz (born October 16, 1880 in Mildenau , Kingdom of Bohemia , † June 12, 1937 in Vienna ) was an Austrian sculptor and medalist .

Life

First and foremost, Scholz learned porcelain working and modeling at the arts and crafts school in Haindorf and at the state arts and crafts school in Reichenberg . He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in the sculpting class of Hans Bitterlich and Edmund von Hellmer . Subsequently he went on a study trip to Italy , France , Belgium and Germany .

During the First World War he was entrusted with the planning and execution of 34 war cemeteries and memorials in Galicia ( Tarnów - Gorlice area ). After the end of the war, Scholz lived and worked as a freelance sculptor in Vienna. From there, however, he also worked on several large sculptures for his home region. In addition to the large-scale sculpture, he also created several small statuettes and medals that were reproduced as porcelain figures or bronze casts years after his death. He signed many of them with Karl von Mildenau.

In 1920 Schulz became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus , and in 1936 its vice-president. In the same year he was awarded the title of professor .

Museum reception

The Vienna Art History Museum keeps small sculptures and medals by Scholz. In the Army History Museum there are six medals by his hand, which he made between 1922 and 1937, and the museum holds nine other works ( relief plaques, memorial plaques and statuettes).
