Heinrich Schmidt-Matthiesen

Heinrich Schmidt-Matthiesen (born March 28, 1923 in Witten ; † May 4, 2006 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German gynecologist , obstetrician and oncologist .

Live and act

Heinrich Schmidt-Matthiesen was born in the Ruhr area . After graduating from school, he was called up for military service in World War II . There he worked in the Air Force . He was a radio operator and navigation instructor as well as a blind flight instructor at a flying school. After the end of the war he was used as a medic in British captivity . This prompted him to study medicine , even though he was actually "enrolled remotely" to study engineering at the Technical University of Danzig .

From 1946 to 1952 Schmidt-Matthiesen studied medicine at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . On December 3, 1952, he was there with a dissertation on the topic "New results on the lymph nodes function" doctorate . From 1952 to 1954 he worked as a compulsory assistant at the Göttingen women's clinic . In 1954/55 Schmidt-Matthiesen worked at the Pathological Institute in Mannheim and then returned to Göttingen . After completing his specialist training under Heinz Kirchhoff, he received his habilitation in 1961 with a thesis on “Histochemical studies on the normal human endometrium” , was appointed senior physician in 1963 and an extraordinary professor in 1966 .

In 1969 Heinrich Schmidt-Matthiesen was appointed to the chair of gynecology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and was appointed director of the university women's clinic. He held his inaugural lecture on “The Influence of the Prenatal Environment on Development” on May 4, 1970. He headed the clinic until his retirement in 1988.

Heinrich Schmidt-Matthiesen died in 2006 at the age of 83.

He had been with his wife Elisabeth Schmidt-Matthiesen, born in 1956. Westhoff, married, with whom he had three children, Andreas, Bettina, and Cornelia.

Honors

In 1963 Schmidt-Matthiesen received the Prix ​​quadiennale of FIGO in Lille . In 1968 he was awarded the annual prize of the Northwest German Society for Gynecology in Lübeck . Between 1978 and 1980 Heinrich Schmidt-Matthiesen was President of the German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics and organized the 1980 congress in Hamburg . He was President of the Middle Rhine Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology , founder of the Rhine-Main Tumor Center , and President of the Hessian Cancer Congress. He was a founding member of the Working Group for Gynecological Oncology (AGO) on September 18, 1981 and until 1987 first chairman of the organization, which today is anchored in the German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics and the German Cancer Society .

Schmidt-Matthiesen was a member of the permanent council of experts of the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology in Bonn from 1979 to 1985 , from 1978 to 1990 delegate of the Federal Republic of Germany to UPIGO , the association of professional associations of gynecologists in European countries, and was a member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina .

He was an honorary member of the professional association of gynecologists , the German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics , the Società Italiana di Ginecologia e Ostetricia , and the Middle Rhine Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics . In 1993 Heinrich Schmidt-Matthiesen was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st Class , for his services in gynecological oncology .

The Working Group for Gynecological Oncology (AGO) of the German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics awards the Schmidt-Matthiesen Prize every two years for innovative achievements in the fields of pathogenesis, pathophysiology, molecular biology, experimental oncology, diagnostic and prognostic factors, therapy of malignant gynecological tumors and supportive measures. The prize, endowed with 8,000 euros, is sponsored by Pfizer Oncology .
