In 1937 he followed Schröder to the University of Leipzig , where he worked until 1939. In 1937 he was appointed private lecturer in Leipzig . After two years of service as a military doctor and appointment as associate professor at the University of Leipzig in 1942, he took over the Lübeck Municipal Women's Clinic in 1944 , which he headed as chief physician until 1954. In that year he accepted a position as successor to Heinrich Martius and full professor at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen . Here he headed the university women's clinic until his retirement in 1973. Walther Kuhn was appointed his successor .

Under the full professorship of Heinz Kirchhoff, the traditional focus of gynecological radiation therapy in the clinic was further expanded through the creation of an independent department and, in 1974, resulted in the establishment of a chair in gynecological radiology at the University of Göttingen for the first time . A separate department for gynecological endocrinology was established under Kirchhoff's direction .

The German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina appointed Heinz Kirchhoff a member in 1964. In 1950, 1956, 1961, 1967 and 1971 he was chairman of the Northwest German Society for Gynecology , which created the Staude-Pfannenstiel Prize in 1967 at his request and renamed itself the Northwest German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics in May 1981 at the suggestion of Kirchhoff . Kirchhoff was a co-founder of the professional association of gynecologists , of which he was also made an honorary member.

After leaving university, Kirchhoff devoted himself to his passion for collecting. The most diverse collections were created, such as stamps, cacti and a studio glass collection, which can be seen today in the Göttingen Municipal Museum . The most important collection is a 600-item collection of symbols of the feminine on the subject of mother goddesses and fertility symbols. Almost 200 exhibits were housed as a permanent exhibition at Göttingen University Hospital from 1997 to 2016.

In 1981 Heinz Kirchhoff was honored with the Paracelsus Medal . He died in 1997 in Göttingen at the age of 91.
