Heinz-Gerd Hegering (born May 29, 1943 in Recklinghausen ) is a German computer scientist and professor emeritus at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , where he held the chair for communication systems and system programming.

Life

Hegering studied in Münster and Munich Mathematics and each was an active member of the Catholic fraternities Osning Munster and K.St.V. Albertia Munich in KV . In 1971 he did his doctorate “On the Rivlin problem of the simultaneous inverse Chebyshev approximation” with Günther Hämmerlin . In the same year he went to the Leibniz Computing Center (LRZ) in Munich as a senior research assistant .

In 1984 Hegering was appointed professor for system programming and computer networks at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) . In 1989 he was appointed as C4 -Professor (professor) at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) appointed. The management of the Leibniz Computing Center of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences as chairman of the board of directors was associated with this call . Due to a resolution by the Council of Ministers, Hegering was able to be a member of the teaching staff of both Munich universities. Hegering stopped teaching in 2008.

He set up the Institute for Computer Science and the corresponding degree in Computer Science at LMU. From 1989 to 2003 he was Managing Director of the Institute for Computer Science. During this time, the institute was expanded from one to seven chairs with a total of twelve professors.

From 1968 Hegering worked for the Leibniz Computing Center (LRZ) . Hegering has been a member of the board of directors of the LRZ since 1989, which he headed from 1989 to 2008 as chairman of the board of directors. Under his leadership, the LRZ was expanded into a national high-performance computing center. Hegering dealt early on with network concepts and network technologies and developed the LRZ into a competence center for networks. During his term of office, the new construction of the LRZ and the relocation of the entire data center "on the fly" from Munich to Garching also fell .

Hegering was involved in setting up the national research network. Shortly after the establishment of the German Research Network (DFN) , Hegering became a member of the Technical Committee in 1985. From 1987 to 2005 he was a member of the Works Committee and from 1990 to 1993 a member of the Board of Directors. From 1996 to 2006 he was a member of the board of directors of the DFN and thus had a decisive influence on the technical development of the German research network and its management.

From 1989 to 2010 Hegering was a member of the IT Advisory Board of the Max Planck Society .

From 1994 to 2000 he was a member of the Commission for Computing Systems of the German Research Foundation (DFG) .

In 1998, Hegering helped set up the Center for Digital Technology and Management (CDTM), a joint research and teaching institute of the two Munich universities. From then until 2010 he was a member of the Board of Directors and was periodically its Acting Scientific Director.

From 2001 to 2008 he was a member of the National Coordination Committee for High Performance Computing of the Science Council .

From 2002 to 2008 he played a decisive role in the steering committee of the German e-Science initiative D-Grid in building a sustainable national grid infrastructure.

In 2006, Hegering played a key role in founding the Gauss Center for Supercomputing (GCS) . He has been on the board of the GCS since 2007 and was its chairman from 2008 to 2013.

Scientific work

During his early work at the LRZ (1968–1984), Hegering dealt with system languages, translator generators as well as computer supply structures and concepts for business organization. In 1979 he introduced one of the first larger data processing networks in Munich and in 1982 he set up the first Ethernet in Germany and corresponding LANs . Since then he has dealt with communication systems, network services and network management . Since then, questions of IT management have been decisive for his further scientific direction. From 1984 to 1999 he dealt with questions of the technical management of heterogeneous data networks, with questions of the effects of new IT supply structures as well as the structure, process, operation and service structures of university data centers. During this period, the first investigations into security concepts for distributed management were also started. Since 1999, new focus areas have been added to the previous research questions. Hegering dealt with the management of IT services , with security concepts for federations, with innovative IT services as well as questions of grid computing and its management.

For many years, Hegering was a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Network and Systems Management as well as of the IEEE Transactions on Systems Management and of the PIK advisory board (Practice of Information Processing and Communication).

MNM team

In 1990 Hegering founded the Munich Network Management Team (MNM-Team), which consists of scientists from TUM , LMU and LRZ and was expanded in 2006 to include members of the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich . The team consists mainly of doctoral students and postdocs and bundles all research projects. As of March 2012, the team had produced 49 dissertations and 8 members had completed their habilitation or were offered a professorship.

fire Department

From 1974 until his age-related retirement in 2003, Hegering was a volunteer member of the Garching volunteer fire department near Munich . As early as 1978 he was promoted to senior command, in 1986 to deputy commander and in 1989 to commander. In 1991 he became district fire chief in the district of Munich . In this function he was also a specialist advisor in the field of radiation protection , hazardous substances , biological agents and environmental protection . As a training manager for the fields of radiation protection and hazardous substances, he was also responsible for training fire brigades in the Munich district.
