Helen is a city in White County in the US state of Georgia with 510 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Helen is located in northeast Georgia in the Blue Ridge Mountains . Unicoi State Park and Smithgall Woods State Park are in the immediate vicinity . The city calls itself "Gateway to the Chattahoochee National Forest " and is about 10 km north of Cleveland . The city of Atlanta is about 120 km to the southwest.

history

The former lumberjack town , which almost became a ghost town, was saved by its own inhabitants by turning it into a replica of a Bavarian Alpine town , in the Appalachians of course , as a replacement for the Alps. The design was made binding in the development plan, so that the classic southern German style can be found on every building today. That is why tourism is the main source of income for the inhabitants of Helen . Most tourists come from the Atlanta metropolitan area on weekends . Helen is packed with crowds in late October when autumn hits its height. It also has its own Oktoberfest there during September, October and November. There are many events and festivals there throughout the year. One is the hot air balloon race that takes place every year on the first weekend in June.

The level of Helen (HELG1) is located on the bridge over the Chattahoochee River in the center of the city .

On August 30, 2005, Helen was partially destroyed when Hurricane Katrina caused a tornado in the area. The northward moving tornado moved just past the city proper, but destroyed a lodge and a motel .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 510 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 252 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.02 people per household. There are a total of 850 households.

54.8% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 2.61 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 19.4% of all households and people aged 65 and over in 41.3% of all households.

18.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 16.0% were 20 to 39 years old, 29.4% were 40 to 59 years old, and 36.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 53 years. 48.6% of the population were male and 51.4% were female.

92.5% of the population identified themselves as whites , 0.6% as African American , 0.4% as Indians and 4.7% as Asian Americans . 1.4% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 0.4% to several ethnic groups. 3.5% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 44,500 USD , while 17.2% of the population lived below the poverty line.

traffic

Georgia State Routes 75 and 356 pass through and touch Helen . A parallel road to the west is signposted Georgia 75 Alt so that it can be recognized as a bypass around the city. In the autumn or in other weekends there are often traffic jams . The nearest airport is Atlanta Airport (around 160 km southwest).

crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 598 points (US average: 266 points) in the high range. There were nine personal injuries, six break-ins, 72 thefts and two car thefts.
