Hellmut Geissner

Karl Hellmut Geißner (also Hellmut K. Geißner or Geissner ; born March 7, 1926 in Darmstadt ; † August 19, 2012 in Lausanne ) was a German rhetoric and speech scholar .

Life

Geißner passed the Abitur in Darmstadt. He then studied Greek, Latin, German, philosophy and speech at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . In 1949 he passed the language trainer examination. In 1955 he received his doctorate from Heinrich Weinstock at the University of Frankfurt. phil. His dissertation entitled “Man and Language” dealt with the philosophy of Hans Lipps .

From 1956 to 1965 he was a research assistant and university lecturer for speech and speech training at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken . From 1964 to 1971 he was the first chairman of the German Society for Speech Science and Speech Education , from which the German Society for Speech Science and Speech Education (DGSS) emerged in 1978 . In 1965 he established the scientific advisory board of the DGSS, from 1966 to 1972 he was the editor of the “Mitteilungen” of the DGSS. As an academic councilor , senior counselor and finally director, he headed the Speech Studies and Speech Training Department at Saarbrücken University from 1965 to 1976.

From 1968 to 1991 he acted as editor (initially together with Wilhelm L. Höffe ) of the series "Sprache und Sprechen". In 1968 Geißner founded the Institute for Rhetoric and Methodology in Political Education (from 1996: Institute for Rhetoric and Methodology ; IRM) at the European Academy of Otzenhausen (EAO). In the same year, the International Colloquium on (Oral) Communication (ICC) was held for the first time , which Geißner initiated together with Fred L. Casmir from the American National Communication Association and which has since taken place every two years in Europe and the USA.

In 1976, Geißner was appointed full professor for speech studies and speech training at the Rhineland-Palatinate University of Education (EWH; Landau in the Palatinate ), from which the University of Koblenz-Landau later emerged. From 1984 to 1987 he was dean of the philological department of the EWH in Landau. From 1983 he was a member of the scientific advisory board of the Hernstein Institute for Management and Leadership near Vienna. From 1985 he was a member of the Scientific Council of the Institute for German Language (IDS). He held the chair for speech science in Landau until his retirement in 1994. He then held teaching positions at the universities of Zurich and Vienna . He was also a long-time seminar leader and trainer for large corporations and media companies.

In addition to the DGSS, of which he was a board member from 1954 to 1984, Geißner was a member of the Society for Applied Linguistics , the Speech Communication Association , the International Society for the History of Rhetoric , the International Society of Phonetics and the International Society for the Study of Argumentation .

Geißner is counted among the most important representatives of speech science, he has fundamentally shaped this subject. He emerged with numerous publications on speech science and speech training as well as rhetoric . In addition, he developed the “five-sentence theory” of argumentation and the situation model of communication. The 13-part television series “Talking and talking” ( SWF / ORF ), which was awarded the Adolf Grimme Prize in, is based on Geißner's teaching of rhetorical communication (standard work “Rhetorik und Politikbildung”, 1973; 3rd edition 1986) Silver has been awarded. He participated in several of the “International Voting Days” of the Academy for the Spoken Word .

Since his retirement, Geißner lived with his second wife in Lausanne, Switzerland. He had two sons with his first wife.
