The University of Koblenz-Landau - from 1969 to 1990 "Educational Science University of Rhineland-Palatinate" - is a university with eight faculties on two campuses in Koblenz and Landau and the seat of its president in Mainz . With over 17,000 students, it is the second largest university in Rhineland-Palatinate . About 61% of the university's students study teacher training courses . In 2018 it was decided to split the university. The Landau location is to merge with the Technical University of Kaiserslautern by 2022 and the Koblenz location is to continue as an independent university.

Teachers seminar

The university, founded in 1990, is based on several predecessor institutions in Koblenz, Landau, Neuwied, Worms, Kaiserslautern and Trier. In 1903, the Royal Prussian Teachers' Seminar was founded in Koblenz, the first educational institution for teachers, but it was closed in 1925 when educational academies were founded. During National Socialism, teacher training was carried out again, but at a low level.

University of Education 1946–1969

After the Second World War, pedagogical academies were founded in Rhineland-Palatinate for teacher training at elementary schools until 1949 , which were upgraded to six pedagogical universities in Kaiserslautern, Koblenz, Landau, Neuwied, Trier and Worms in 1960 .

Rhineland-Palatinate University of Education 1969–1990

These went into the Educational Science University of Rhineland-Palatinate (EWH), founded on October 1, 1969 , which, in addition to Landau and Koblenz, also had departments in Mainz and Worms. In 1970 EWH was granted the right to confer doctorates and habilitation . In 1978 the department in Worms was dissolved and the special education department in Mainz was relocated to the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz in 1985 .

Foundation of the University of Koblenz-Landau

On October 1, 1990, the EWH was converted to the University of Koblenz-Landau and the departments of computer science in Koblenz and psychology in Landau were established. Since then the university has eight departments. In 1992 the Institute for Special Education was returned to the Landau campus from the Johannes Gutenberg University.

During excavation work for the new central building of the University of Koblenz-Landau, a British air mine weighing 1,800 kg was found on May 20, 1999 . This was one of the largest bombs found in Koblenz after the Second World War and, when defused, led to the largest ever evacuation of the population. After the university moved from the Koblenz district of Oberwerth to the Metternich district in 2002, it has one of the newest campuses in Germany in Koblenz . In 2004, new buildings were put into operation in Landau in addition to the old campus. More were added in 2010 as a new “stairway from the city to the campus”. The main campus is currently being modernized and expanded.

In 2019 it was decided to split the university. The Landau site is to merge with the University of Kaiserslautern by 2022 and the Koblenz site is to continue as an independent university. The administration in Mainz is to be divided between Koblenz and Landau.

Structure of the university

The university management consists of a collegial university management with the President May-Britt Kallenrode , the Vice-President Stefan Wehner (Campus Koblenz), the Vice-President Gabriele Schaumann (Campus Landau) and the Chancellor Michael Ludewig.

The number of students has quadrupled since 1990. There are now over 17,000 students enrolled, around half in Koblenz and half in Landau. This divided structure of the university with two campuses approx. 150 kilometers apart and a joint presidential office in Mainz is unique in Germany. The two campuses each have four departments:

In addition to its eight faculties and its facilities, the university has set up a DFG graduate college, a graduate academy, a graduate school and an interdisciplinary doctoral center for the qualification of young scientists.

The University of Koblenz-Landau occupies a prominent position in terms of equality between women and men. According to a survey by the education provider WBS, in which the 44 largest universities in Germany were examined, it ranks third with 35.5 percent of female professors. This puts it at the top together with the University of Kassel and the University of Applied Sciences Hamburg. It is also one of the thirteen universities run by a woman. The collegial university management is also staffed equally. The university supports the implementation of gender equality through a variety of projects, such as female professor program III, mentoring, the Ada Lovelace project, promotion of young female researchers and a graduate school for gender research.

Focus in research and teaching

The University of Koblenz-Landau aligns research and teaching to three interlinked, interdisciplinary profile areas: education, people, the environment. The expansion of the range of courses and further education, the intensification of the promotion of young scientists and the stronger international orientation of all areas of the university are further development goals.

Within the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, the university plays an outstanding role in educational sciences and teacher training. It is the only university in the state to offer teacher training courses for all types of schools. This core competence characterizes the profile area. Important features are also the combination of pedagogy and subject didactics, the great importance of extracurricular learning locations and student laboratories as well as the link between science and school pedagogical practice, e.g. B. via the CampusSchule networks.

This profile area is shaped by the humanities, cultural and social sciences, in which in particular languages, art and culture, politics and economics are analyzed, optimized by psychology as a human sciences and computer science, which develops extensive IT-based services for people and tested for their practicality.

Three scientific approaches characterize this profile area. The environmental science approach addresses the scientifically describable environment, computer science deals with the technical-digital environment, and the humanities and social sciences understand the environment as a cultural or social environment.

Teacher training courses

The University of Koblenz-Landau is the only university in Rhineland-Palatinate to offer teacher training courses for all types of schools. On both campuses, both a bachelor's and master's degree for teaching at a primary school, secondary school plus and high school can be acquired. In addition, teaching-related bachelor's and master's degrees can be studied on the Landau campus for the special needs school and on the Koblenz campus for vocational schools .

Postgraduate distance learning and in-service training

The Center for Distance Learning and University Continuing Education (ZFUW) has been a central facility of the University of Koblenz-Landau since 1991 . It is the oldest distance learning institution at universities in Rhineland-Palatinate and specializes in offering postgraduate distance learning courses and part-time distance learning courses. It also offers training courses in face-to-face format (e.g. seminars). The educational format for distance learning follows the ' blended learning concept', i.e. H. a combination of phases of guided self-study with the help of written learning materials and presence phases.

Former courses

The courses in art education , art teaching , social studies and the postgraduate Master of Arts in health management have been discontinued. Due to the concentration of music on the Koblenz campus decided by the Senate in July 2012, the Institute for Musicology and Music on the Landau campus accepted the last music students in the winter semester 2012/13.
