Hellmuth Matiasek , also: Helmuth Matiasek , (born May 15, 1931 in Vienna ) is an Austrian director and artistic director .

education

Matiasek studied directing and acting at the Max Reinhardt Seminar of the University of Music and Performing Arts and theater studies , musicology , German literature and philosophy at the University of Vienna and graduated in 1958 with the graduation to the Dr. phil. from.

Theater work

In 1953 Matiasek founded the avant-garde theater Kaleidoskop in Vienna, today's Atelier-Theater , and acted as its director. In 1955 he worked as a director at the Salzburger Landestheater and in 1960 under the direction of Oscar Fritz Schuh at the Städtische Bühnen Köln, before he took over the management of the Salzburger Landestheater from 1962 to 1964. 1964–1967 Matiasek was general director of the Braunschweig State Theater , 1978–1983 he held the same position at the Wuppertal Theaters and 1983–1996 he was director of the State Theater on Gärtnerplatz in Munich . 1997–2008 Matiasek was artistic director of the Orff Festival in Andechs , and from 2000–2003 he was also president of the Bavarian Theater Academy August Everding .

In addition to his permanent engagements, Matiasek has staged as a guest director at numerous stages in Germany and abroad, including at the Hamburg State Opera , the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg , the Theater am Kurfürstendamm and the Komödie am Kurfürstendamm in Berlin , the Bavarian State Theater in Munich , the Munich Kammerspiele , the Stuttgart State Opera , the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe , the Bremen Theater , the Burgtheater Vienna , as well as at the Salzburg and Bregenz Festivals . His activities abroad include guest engagements in Basel , Bern , Stockholm , Zagreb and Barcelona .

Teaching activities, offices and memberships

Matiasek was director of the Otto Falckenberg School in Munich from 1972 to 1978 and president of the Bavarian Theater Academy and the Prinzregententheater from 2000 to 2003 . He was also involved in the German Stage Association , the German Center of the International Theater Institute (ITI), is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Akademie Schloss Solitude and teaches as a lecturer at several universities and colleges. Matiasek also sits on the final examination committee of the Athanor Academy .

Awards

Matiasek won the Austrian Theater Director's Prize in 1963, was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class in 1992 and was awarded the Austrian Decoration of Honor for Science and Art in 1993 ; In 1996 he was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit ; In 2003 he received the Upper Bavarian Culture Prize and in 2008 the Pro meritis scientiae et litterarum award from the Free State of Bavaria.

Private life

Matiasek has been married to actress Cornelia Froboess for the second time since 1967 . The marriage resulted in a daughter, Agnes, and a son, Kaspar.
